On Tuesday we attended mass, which was also the Feast Day of St Blaise.
St Blaise is an important saint in the Christian calendar and is remembered each year on the 3rd February. He lived in the 4th century and was a bishop and doctor in Armenia. St Blaise was known for his strong Christian faith and for caring for the sick, especially those with illnesses of the throat.
One of the most well-known stories about St Blaise explains why he is the patron saint of throat illnesses. It is said that he saved a young boy who was choking on a fish bone by praying for him, and the boy was miraculously healed and because of this miracle, St Blaise became closely linked with healing and protection of the throat.
Following mass, Father Paul invited us to a Blessing of the Throats. He held two crossed candles nearto each person’s throat and said a prayer asking God to protect them from illness, especially problems related to the throat.
We pray for good heatlh for one another, our family, our comminity and ourselves. Thank you Father Paul for blessing us and for the opportunity to learn more about why St Blaise is still remembered and revered to this day.
