Year 5 Lenten Family Workshop

This week we hosted our Lent craft afternoon for family members, where we came together to pray and reflect on this time of spiritual preparation as we lead up to Easter. We invited our family members to join us as we read Bible scripture and offered up our Lenten intentions with the prayers of the faithful.

 

The children then shared the things that they think their adult at home should consider fasting from during Lent. There were many varied suggestions such as giving up certain types of food or drinks to adults spending less time working so that the children could spend more time with them. The most popular suggestion was for their adult to spend less time on their phone – something we are all guilty of it seems!

 

We then spent the time creating the scene from Golgotha and recreated the cross that Jesus was crucified on with moss, sand and stone. The children had some beautiful and thoughtful ideas as they reflected on how the terrain would have been at the time and how Jesus would have felt as he suffered his final hours.

We ended the afternoon by gifting each family a set of rosary beads and encouraged them to consider praying the rosary together during Lent. It was an incredibly special afternoon and so wonderful to see so many adults attend – we understand that its not always convenient with work or other commitments so we really do appreciate the time that people take out of their day. For those who couldn’t attend, the children were able to bring home the crafting items to share and make with their adult at home so we hope that everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the experience and to spend some time reflecting on this time of Lent and on God with their child.

Helping the Homeless

As part of our Lenten intentions, Year 5 have been thinking about people who are less fortunate than themselves. We decided to make food parcels for the homeless to help members of our community who rely on a local homeless shelter for food and support.

The children prepared over 30 parcels packed with a sandwich that they made themselves, a piece of fruit, a packet of crisps and a bar of chocolate.

The parcels were collected by the lovely Mrs Atwal who has worked at All Souls for many years and who now works in our school nursery. Mrs Atwal kindly delivered the parcels, along with 30 bottles of water, the same day to the shelter, for them to pass on to the homeless people who use their services. The following day Mrs Atwal told us how appreciative the recipients were and how gratefully the parcels were received.

Well done Year 5 on your enthusiasm and empathy as you prepared the food and your continued interest in how we can help those around us to support and improve our local community!

Spring Cinquains!

This week we have taken our learning outside in search of inspiration for our Spring-themed cinquain poems. The children really enjoyed spending some time the sunshine and blustery wind and drafted some excellent ideas before getting to work on forming their cinquain.  They selected their vocabulary carefully and concisely to create their poetic masterpieces! We were so pleased with the results that we have displayed the poems around our classroom. Well done Year 5!

Book Fair

The children were excited to have a sneak peek at the wonderful books that are on sale at this week’s Book Fair! The doors open officially from 4th – 7th February in our school hall, 3.15pm to 3.45pm. Please come along and support us. The more money we take, the more books we can buy for our school!

Maths: cubes and calculations!

We have started a new topic in maths this week so we decided to use the cubes to help us to master division of 3 and 4 digit numbers. We learnt a new method to help us to divide whole numbers and checked our answers using the inverse operation.

Working in pairs and using our sets of cubes helped us to create a range of number sentences. We also challenged some of the incorrect answers that Tiny the Turtle had tried to trick us with. Better luck next time Tiny!

Christmas Savoury Rolls!

We have had a fun and foodie-filled morning creating our Festive Rolls! The children designed a menu card detailing the ingredients and the method before we set to work to make our delicious treat.

The children carefully added the ingredients of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, garlic and cheese and rolled them into their individual Christmas Festive Rolls!

The end results were very impressive and a huge thank you for supporting the children at home to bake the items to perfection! Thank you for sharing the photographs and it was great to hear how much the children enjoyed creating and baking their items.

We hope that the children will be able to show you how to re-use and re-invent any surplus food from your Christmas dinner with their stylish new recipe!

 

 

Advent Afternoon!

We thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon with our parents and carers by inviting them to join us at our advent prayer service and crafting event. As part of our preparations for Christmas we talked about what our hopes are and if we had one wish for the festive season what it would be. The children hoped for many things ranging from a white Christmas; to hearing less Mariah Carey songs; to hoping to spend more time with friends and family and for loved ones, who are no longer with us, to be able to join them one last time for Christmas dinner. It was lovely to hear so many thoughtful and heart-warming reflections.

The children then spent some time creating a bauble wreath to take home as a reminder of the season of advent. We had some wonderful creations in-spite of the tremendous amount of baubles required for the event!

Most importantly the children spending time with those closest to them and we really hope that you enjoyed the afternoon! Thank you so much for taking the time to join us and for those who were unable to make it; we hope that you will look fondly on your handmade bauble wreath for years to come!

Feeling Festive in our Music Lesson!

Year 5 have been getting into the Christmas Spirit by learning how to play Jingle Bells, Away in a Manger and Silent Night on the glockenspiel.

The children really enjoyed their weekly session with Mrs Cooke and it was impressive to see them read from sheet music and perform in unison. The children did a wonderful performance that we are very proud to share with you!

Beautiful Bookmarks!

Year 5 have been getting creative in their English writing lesson by publishing a procedural text entitled ‘How to Make an Origami Bookmark’.

The children carefully planned their instructions on how to make their chosen design using lots of imperative verbs and creative flair!  The result was a range of imaginative and thoughtfully designed creations with a set of step-by-step instructions to help any budding origami enthusiasts to create their own at home.

All of the designs were incredibly impressive spanning from jungle animals to Marvel characters, rusty robots and out-of-this-world aliens!

The children had lots of fun exploring their creative skills and learnt a thing or two about procedural texts along the way! Well done Year 5!

 

Cat and Mouse Maths!

Last week we finished our first math unit on place value and ended the topic by exploring our knowledge of 5 digit numbers with some interactive challenges. The children have worked very hard on their place value topic and enjoyed testing their new knowledge out on each other.

We began this week with our new unit on addition and subtraction; revisiting what we already know and learning new methods to tackle the bigger number problems.

Next week will be inviting our table partners to a game of Cat and Mouse maths! The children are looking forward to exploring their skills in their new topic and learning lots of new ones. We look forward to seeing how many cats manage to catch their mice in our next lesson!
