This term Year 2 have been exploring habitats and the places where animals live. We have been able to search our prayer garden in a hunt for minibeasts, which was very successful.

We have also welcomed two minibeasts of our own into the classroom. Two indian stick insects (named Rosie and Woody) will be cared for by the children with a healthy supply of rose bush leaves.

In our unit of Maths for this term, year 2 have been measuring, weighing and estimating.

We’ve had a blast making sensible guesses and checking our answers, using thermometers, trundle wheels and most recently weighing scales. Somehow everything from bananas to shoes found their way into the measuring buckets. Well done year 2 on a great start to Maths this term.

In Design and Technology, we are creating a shelter designed for a target audience. Year 2 gave hedgehogs a place to hibernate through winter today by creating an amazing range of homes for them to live in.

We first planned out the homes, decided on what materials would be needed and created a set of instructions to follow. Then we used all of the planning to get our hands messy and make the hibernation shelters.

Thank you to parents and carers who donated so many cardboard boxes; we had enough for some children to add extensions on to their houses.

Year 2 have had a busy few weeks so far this term.

I have enjoyed getting to know the new class a little better and hearing all the stories from summer holidays. We have started our year getting stuck straight in to our topics; from burying letters to ourselves at the end of the year in Literacy to exploring the school playground searching out for materials during a Science afternoon.

We have a fantastic year ahead of us and I look forward to our upcoming learning together.
