Attention Year 6 Families and Friends (and Famous People?) 

Would you like to become one of our VIP Readers? 

Once a month, we invite someone new into our classroom (either in person or virtually) as our VIP reader. This month we enjoyed a session with Hannah Gold, author of ‘Turtle Moon’, ‘The Last Bear’, ‘Finding Bear’ and ‘The Lost Whale’. Next month, it could be you! 

Our aim is for children to be exposed to different reading voices, different text choices and have the opportunity to find out more about other people’s reading experiences, preferences, recommendations and advice whilst also bringing a even more excitement and enjoyment into our reading time. 

All you need to do is choose an extract of your choice (this could be from your favourite childhood book, a recent news article, a poem, something original or something from the Bible!) and turn up on your selected date at 2.50pm. You will have the opportunity to spend 10-15 minutes sharing this extract with the class before allowing them 5 minutes to ask you some questions. This is a complete surprise to the children on the day as they love the reveal of who is behind the book!

Writing with a real life purpose and audience!

Year 6 were enthused with their recent writing unit in English as they were tasked with twisting a traditional tale into a story their prayer friends in Reception would enjoy. Today, they had the pleasure of sharing their stories with one another, introducing them to The Three Little Wolves, Innocent Locks, Little Rotten Riding Hood and many more interesting characters and stories – including dinosaurs and unicorns!

Once again, Reception were the perfect audience, listening with respect, showcasing their enjoyment and were able to recall what happened in their prayer friend’s story!

What a fantastic way to start a Wednesday!

Whatever Next!

This week Reception began our learning based on the book ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy. We had great fun acting out the story and have been busy making our own rockets out of junk modelling!

Cat and Mouse Maths!

Last week we finished our first math unit on place value and ended the topic by exploring our knowledge of 5 digit numbers with some interactive challenges. The children have worked very hard on their place value topic and enjoyed testing their new knowledge out on each other.

We began this week with our new unit on addition and subtraction; revisiting what we already know and learning new methods to tackle the bigger number problems.

Next week will be inviting our table partners to a game of Cat and Mouse maths! The children are looking forward to exploring their skills in their new topic and learning lots of new ones. We look forward to seeing how many cats manage to catch their mice in our next lesson!

 

 

 

Repeated Patterns!

It’s been all about repeated patterns this week in Reception! We have made them in so many different ways within our play. Our favourite was making a repeated pattern fruit skewer!

Thank you to all the children who brightened our classroom today with their colourful clothes and for all the generous donations of food items to be shared amongst those in need. 

Teaching our Prayer Friends a valuable message

In RE this week, Year 6 were tasked with showing their understanding of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel by retelling the story and its important messages to their prayer friends.

The children in Year 6 worked hard to do this in a way that made sense to their prayer friends and left them with some very important messages to go forth with which Reception were able to articulate very well!
