Today, on behalf of Year 6, Niamh, Izzy and Simeon attended Coventry Young People’s Peace and Reconiliation Conference 2019.
The Coventry Lord Mayor’s Committee for Peace and Reconciliation invited teachers and home educators to bring up to 3 students from years 6 to 9 to talk to peace activists and organisations fighting crime and violence at Coventry’s Council House.
They sat with the peace activists in facilitated circles in which everyone had an equal right to speak and be heard. The young people were given the opportunity to be able to explain how they feel about violence, knife crime, gangs etc. They discussed what problems young people currently face and what they think needs to be done about it.Teachers, Police, PeaceMakers, Restorative Justice facilitators and members of the community talked about what they are already doing to promote safety and peace and what challenges they face. The children then helped to brainstorm what more can be done to reduce violence and conflict and increase peace, justice, forgiveness and reconciliation.
The event ended with a summary of the ideas raised and Coventry Lord Mayor’s Committee for Peace and Reconciliation announced how they will be helping young people, schools and peace activists put their ideas into practice.
