Thank you to all parents and grandparents who attended Parents Evening this week. It was lovely to catch up with you all and spend time sharing your child’s achievements and progress so far this year. As always, should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Well done to all of Year 6 for collectively making promises as part of their Commitment Mass today in preparation for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation in June this year. Thank you to Roisin, Finn and Orla O for reading beautifully. Thank you also to Mrs Etherson, Mrs Brennan, Mr Schofield, Mrs Gaffney and Mr Walsh for reading the bidding prayers at mass today, especially at such short notice.

Last but not least, I finally had chance to read your stories that you wrote over the half term break; I thoroughly enjoyed them. It was very difficult to pick the winners but as promised:

1st place: The Abandoned House by Jordan Chatland *20RT*

2nd place: The Watchmaker’s Daughter by Aoife Walsh *10RT*

3rd place: Taken by Ben Jones *5RT*

I would also like to award Annie, Grace H and Roisin with 2RT each.

Well done to all of you! I will put them together into a book to add to our library for you to all read.

      The Abandoned House.

A short story by Jordan Chatland.

Drip, drip, drip! Scarlett Dimmsdale sat slumped on her bed. Drip, drip, drip – that was all she could hear. The dripping continued: drip, drip, drip! The water ran rapidly – rapidly like a wildebeest – down onto Scarlett’s dark, murky, fluffy blood red carpet. Drip, drip, drip! The child glanced up; there was no hole. A sudden strike of fear rushed up the small girl’s tingling spine. Her eyes were glued open, looking around. She could also hear howls –loud howls – rushing through the air.

Drip, drip, drip! On the stroke of midnight Scarlett decided to make a move. Slowly – slower than the slowest snail – she placed her feet on to the cold floor. She slipped her slippers on and tiptoed down the cold, wooden, icy stairs hoping to see her parents (Lizzie and Jack). A light was on. It was shining on two figures: one bold and bulky, one slender and scrawny. Scarlett, one hundred percent sure that the two figures were her parents, ran up to them.

A piercing scream ran through the house; loud and ear-splitting. The small girl screamed – one thousand times louder than you would imagine. The figures eyes were replaced with deep, hollow sockets as black as the night sky. An icky red substance was trickling down their ripped, shredded, ragged outfits from their scarred faces to their grubby toes. Scarlett huffed and puffed. They weren’t here parents… Who were they? Her heart pounded, beating like a drum. The figures stood still. Still and motionless.

Panting and puffing, the girl ran into a nearby forest – it was murky and gloomy. She forbade herself to ever go back to her house on 32 Ruanda Drive. The house has now been left abandoned for over 67 years. A filthy dusty powder sat on every object in every room; making a lovely home for spiders! Every so often the creaky old door hanging off its hinges would creak open letting ghostly gusts of wind rush out. The windows were bordered up with wooden boards. The house, which was on its way to dissolving into ashes, stood isolated from any other normal red-brick houses. No one knows where Scarlett is now, or if she’s still alive. All we know is that Scarlett no longer lives on 32 Ruanda drive…
