Magic potions, painting and finding the difference. A week in Year 1.

By Mrs K McGOVERN2nd May 2016

Congratulations to Julia and Lawson our two Superstars of the week.

Two well deserved Superstars, excellent effort, manners and attitude all week.

The week began with our first lesson in the newly refurbished Learning Hub. A bright, inspiring and interactive environment where the children can truly engage with all aspects of ICT learning.

With great patience, Mr Youson guided the children through accessing and searching the internet for information.

On Tuesday we continued our topic all about colour in art. The children had great fun mixing primary colours to produce secondary colours.

I have never seen so many shades of green, orange and purple. The children were very focused and produced some lovely work, much better than my own attempt at colour mixing!

Subtraction was the mathematic focus for the week. The children were learning many different ways to subtract (yes there are quite a few!) using a range of equipment.

DSCN2625 DSCN2628 DSCN2631 DSCN2629

Here they are learning to ‘find the difference’, quite a tricky concept.

Well done to Julia who is our ‘Hit the Button’ champion for quick recall of times table facts. Mrs McGovern was the staff champion until Mr Cooke accepted the challenge and beat Mrs McGoverns score by 8 points. The competition continues! Watch this space.

Our week ended with glitter, foam, cloud puffs, ocean waves and magic. Our final English lesson linked to Spells by Emiliy Gravitt was to mix a magic potion and write the instructions.

The children had great fun, they made some interesting potions, the classroom was lost in a cloud of glitter and filled with shrieks of delight from the children. A lovely end to our week.

Saint George and Spells in Year 1

By Mrs K McGOVERN24th April 2016

What a busy week!

The children have worked very hard and have been ‘up to all sorts’.

In RE the children are becoming very competent at organising and leading class prayer services. They have matured and are able to offer some thoughtful prayers. If you are in school take a look at the Year 1 Easter display in the hall. Each child produced a beautiful angel based on the book The Easter Story by Brian Wildsmith.

Our key text in English was Spells by Emiliy Gravitt. The tale of a sad, lonely frog who wants to become a handsome prince. The children really enjoyed the story and the unique style of illustrations. I will let them tell you what happens and what the frog turns into!

Maths was a week of understanding and using place value. The children worked on mystery numbers, writing numbers and different ways of representing hundreds, tens & ones. There was an emphasis on presentation, with some children setting out their work just like the children in Key Stage 2.

We continued our science topic  humans and other animals. The children had lots of fun labelling and matching different parts of animals.

The children made a great start to their athletics lessons, hurdles and spatial awareness. I was delighted with their effort, behaviour and achievement.

Thank you for supporting our St George’s Day celebrations. The children looked great in their red and white, complete with a princess and some knights.  The afternoon was a real success the children enjoyed making their flags and learning all about St George. The PTA  did an amazing job decorating the hall and St George and Askcabar made a real impression.

Welcome Back Year 1

By Mrs K McGOVERN17th April 2016

Welcome Back, we hope you had a lovely Easter holiday.

The children have returned rested and ready for the third and final term of Year 1.

Summer term began with a week of practical maths. The children worked on coin recognition and adding coins of different values. So hopefully they will  spend their pocket money wisely!

Learning about capacity has been great fun if not a little wet and messy.

Working together to compare and order capacity.

In Science the children are learning about humans and other animals. We began our topic with a lesson, labelling body parts.

In art the children are discovering the wonderful world of colour and began with a lesson painting the colour wheel.

DSCN2573 DSCN2574 DSCN2575 DSCN2576

A full newsletter will follow next week, detailing the curriculum and activities over the Summer Term. In the meantime a reminder to label any of your child’s belongings including shoes and PE kits.

We’ve had a busy but great start to the Summer Term. the children have matured and are able to apply themselves more independently to their learning. We look forward to the busy term ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

Breakfast is Served!

By Mrs K McGOVERN14th March 2016

Thank you for supporting

Britain’s Biggest Breakfast in aid of Cancer Research.

A great way to start the day.

With your support Y1 & Y2 raised a total of £59.86.

Well done to Archie Smith and Darci Birley this weeks class Super Stars.

Jack and the Beanstalk is our key literacy text. The children were very surprised

to receive a ‘giant sized’ letter from the giant in the story asking for some help with measuring.

The giant kindly provided paper cut outs of his foot span and set a number of measuring challenges for the children.

Next week Year 1 will be going for a ‘Welly Walk’ on Hearsall Common as part of a geography environment study. A letter will be sent home on Monday evening please contact me if you do not receive a letter.

Thank you for your continued support.

Well Done Year 1

By Mrs K McGOVERN5th March 2016

Another busy week in Year 1.

Firstly a huge congratulations to our three Coventry Half Marathon runners.

Archie, Alannah and Cerys, they were very proud of their achievement and

wore their finishers medals all day. Rightly so!

Well done to Year 1 for their lovely Mother’s Day Assembly. ,

After some very last minute re-casting of parts (as parents were entering the hall) the children proudly showed how much their mums mean to them. Hopefully all those who have been off due to illness will be fully recovered and back to school soon.

World Book Day

A wonderful day of dressing up and reading. The children looked great. Thank you for your support.

Despite the cold and sudden snow showers the children in Year 1 had a great Gaelic Football lesson. John the coach praised them for their behaviour and effort, well done.

By Mrs K McGOVERN24th February 2016

The children have returned to school after the half term ready and willing!

to learn.

Lent has begun and the children have each made a Lenten promise. Ask your child what they have promised? I think there will be a few surprises!

Congratulations to Lola and Lucas who have been elected as Year 2 School Council representative. Well done to all the children who prepared speeches, made banners and wore home made badges for ‘Election Day.

Well done to Molly and Lorcan our  Super Stars for last week.

In mathematics we have been busy learning to solve 2 step addition and subtraction problems, using multiplication facts to solve word problems and create number puzzles.

In Literacy we have continued our work based on Winnie the Witch stories.

We have been learning to add the suffixes ‘ment and less’ to words and will hopefully be using them in next weeks literacy lesson.

Each day we have taken some time to sit quietly and say a decade of the Rosary.

One week left before half term, with painting, melting chocolate experiments and Nativity Play auditions to look forward to!

Mrs McGovern, Miss Fox and the children of Year 2.
