A great start!

6th November 2016Mrs K McGOVERN

The children have made a great start to the new half term.

Well done to Julia and Olivier, our class superstars this week.

Thank you for your support with your child’s history homework. The family trees will be a starting point for our history topic this half term.

English: we began our work on adjectives and will continue with work on verbs and instruction writing next week.

Mathematics: a week of using mathematical language to understand more and less.

This week will begin our times table challenge, watch this space!

Science: We began our topic of everyday materials, the children enjoyed identifying materials and sorting a range of everyday objects and quickly moved on to describing properties of different materials.

It’s that time of year! rehearsals for the Nativity play begin this week. On Monday the final parts will be given to the children.

Dates for the Nativity Play:

Thursday 15th December 1:30pm

Friday 16th December 9:30am

Well done Year 1

By Mrs K McGOVERN16th October 2016

Well done to our two class Superstars this week, Julia for working hard in maths and

Jack-Dean for great progress in reading.

All the children have worked very hard this week and we are very proud of them.

In this weeks ‘spelling quiz’ more children achieved full marks and we are on our way to each child spelling all their words correctly!

For some children homework will be more detailed, with a revisit to previous spellings and using them in sentence construction. Please support your child with their homework.

Each day we see the children growing in confidence and independence. They are taking greater responsibility for leading the daily routines within the classroom, leading prayers, handing out books, sorting equipment and looking after the environment.

This week will be the ‘big reveal’ of classroom monitors and assigned jobs. The children have shown great enthusiasm for helping and tidying and some ‘jobs’ are in great demand!

Who knew tidying the cloakroom would be so interesting!

We completed our maths work on shape this week with a shape hunt around the school grounds. The children were very enthusiastic and found lots of different 2D and 3D shapes.

In English they became noun and verb detectives identifying verbs and nouns in text, then using them in writing.

On parents evening a large number of parents raised the issue of their child’s listening and attention skills when at home.

True listening is an essential life skill and particularly at school. As a result we have been working on a whole class programme of listening games and activities.

Tuesday 18th October 2016 Years 1 and 2 class mass is at 9.15am please join us if you can.

So as we begin our final week of the half term I would like to thank you for your continued support.

Well done to Noah & Tessa our two deserving Super Stars this week.

Thank you for your support with ‘Colour For CAFOD day’ the children looked great.DSCF7339

Our CAFOD assembly, a lovely opportunity to gather together as a school and show our support for others. We were joined by Reception class for the first time, a brief visit to donate their tins.

On Tuesday we celebrated the Feast of St Francis. The children lead prayers in the prayer garden and decorated the trees with birds of thanks.

On Friday the children completed a week of learning about 2 & 3D shapes, with an afternoon

of practical maths, applying their knowledge of shape to their models and pictures.

Goodbye & Thank you

By Mrs K McGOVERN20th July 2016

The last day in Year 1 has ended, hot and happy. The children coped brilliantly in the heat.

It has been a week of goodbyes. Firstly we said goodbye to Laura and Eliska has they headed to Poland and Solvakia to spend time with their families. Then on Monday we said an emotional goodbye and good luck to Sienna and her family as they begin their new life in Canada.

We begin our last day with a wonderful leavers assembly presented by the children in Year 6. I was lucky enough to work with them twice. I personally wish each and every one of them every happiness for their future. Take the learning and messages you shared with us and follow your dreams, you can achieve.

I said see you later to Miss Fox. Miss Fox and I have worked together for 10 years and I would like to say thank you, you have been amazing. Miss Fox is a very caring person and the children are lucky enough to be working with her again next year. Mr Rolison and Miss Fox have been getting to know each other over the last few weeks, and will be a great partnership to take the children forward on their next stage of learning.

Then it was time to said goodbye to Archie and his family as they head off to begin an exciting new life in Australia. We wish them every happiness and will keep them in our prayers. finally we said goodbye as a class, we celebrated all our summer birthdays, we hope Ayda, Lola, Archie & Daniel have a wonderful day. We spent the afternoon eating chocolate cake in the nursery garden and finished our day with outdoor prayers in the Saint Francis prayer garden.

Finally thank you for all our lovely gifts, vouchers, cards and messages of thanks. We really appreciate them. Have a brilliant summer!

thank you

Mrs McGovern & Miss Fox

Moving on up!

By Mrs K McGOVERN9th July 2016

It is that time of year when we say goodbye and hello to staff and children leaving and joining All Souls’ School. Year 1 have been lucky enough to be joined by Mr T Rolison who will be their Year 2 teacher  next year.

This has been an ideal opportunity for both the children and Mr Rolison to meet and spend time getting to know each other before the autumn term.

As part of their transition afternoon the children had to build spaghetti and marshmallow towers. This was a great opportunity to work together as a team. When I went into view the towers their was not a crumb of evidence to be found. The children and Mr Rolison were smiling though! Suspicious! where had the marshmallows from the towers gone?

During Friday’s PE lesson the children worked in their house teams to complete obstacle courses. They completed the course in pairs carrying a balloon, then traveling together holding ribbon.

This involved sharing, considering others and developing negotiation skills. The children enjoyed these activities and had great fun, some real team leaders shone through.

Finally well done to Oliver and Cerys our two superstars this week. They received their award from Mr Rolison for great leadership in the marshmallow tower challenge.

Seven days to go!

Thank you for your continued support.

Keep on turning!

By Mrs K McGOVERN27th June 2016

Congratulations to James and Laura our two Superstars.

Both very deserving of their Super Star award.

Year 1 continued their work on position and direction in maths.

Monday morning the children were outside busily learning about 1/4 turns, clockwise

and anti clockwise. This would explain the mystery circles drawn on the playground.

On Thursday morning  Alannah, Cerys, Archie and Frankie lead the class in a prayer service.

A lovely quiet time of reflection and thanks within a busy week.

On Friday the children worked together in groups to present the story of Little Red Riding Hood using stick puppets. To my delight we have some great acting talent in Year 1 and maybe a script writer or two!

As another busy week ends and the last few days in Year 1 loom, I continue to be proud of the children and their achievements this year. They are working very hard as we make the most of every moment available to us.

Finally I would like to say congratulations to the children in Year 6 who made their Confirmation this Sunday. All the children of Year 6 were a credit to themselves their families and the school.  I was delighted to share their special moment with them.

Left right! left right!

18th June 2016Mrs K McGOVERN

Year 1 have spent the week learning  left and right, they have been marching, following dance instructions and giving directions. The children spent Tuesday wearing their left and right wrist bands. Their challenge was to answer five left, right questions and win five stars. Much to my delight a challenge they all met with enthusiasm and fun, particularly when they had to touch their  left ear with their left hand and touch some ones left knee with their right hand and circle to the left then right , three times.

Our English focus this week has been traditional and playground  rhymes.

Here we are practising singing a ’round’ for the first time. We are not quite ready for The Albert Hall just yet!

Miss Fox and I would like to say a huge thank you for your support with this weeks phonics reading task. Your support and encouragement made a real  difference. Each child has completed the phonics screening check. You will be informed of your child’s mark with their end of year report.

Please remember in your prayers the children in Year 6 as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation next Sunday.

Thank you for your continued support.

Next week Year 1 will be planting a variety of herbs and an ornamental olive tree.

Now all we have to do is keep Miss Fox away from the hose.

Year 1 Tennis in the Sun

By Mrs K McGOVERN7th May 2016

Congratulations to this weeks Super Stars, Lola Grocott, excellent work in maths and Archie Galdins excellent effort with  presentation and handwriting.

Well done both.

Year 1 enjoyed a taster tennis lesson with John the coach. Here are a few photo’s.

The children really enjoyed the session, making human nets and getting to grips with handling a tennis racket. One skill they learnt, say “warriors” to your child and see what happens!

After a successful and hot PE lesson in the sun, 10 minuets to relax in the shade.DSCN2563 DSCN2562 DSCN2560

Well done to Archie Galdins, this weeks Hit the Button times table challenge champion.

Finally, Year 1 send wishes and prayers to their friends in Year 3, who will receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion this weekend.

Thank you for your continued support.
