What an exciting afternoon we have had in Year 5 and 6. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Bablake and we all took part in a forces workshop. We had lots of fun investigating many forces including water resistance, air resistance and friction. We even saw the effects of static electricity when Martha got charged up and her hair stood on end!
We have had another exciting week in Year 5, brimming with success and celebrations!
Well done to the four children who represented All Souls’ in the annual Catholic Schools Maths Challenge. This was a competition against 10 other Catholic schools where there was a combination of individual and team rounds based on the Year 5 Maths curriculum. We came a whopping THIRD place! Well done to Callum, Regina, James and Martha! 🙂
Another big congratulations to the first chlidren in Year 5 to be awarded with their pen licence plus! You have worked so hard to earn this and should be very proud of yourselves.Keep up the hard work James, Regina, Issy, Martha and Grace!
Finally, our garden has started to bloom! The radishes and carrots have started to come through..it won’t be too long until we can pick and eat them! Here is some pictures of us planting and tending to the garden.
We’ve had a great afternoon investigating in Year 5! We were finding out whether the surface area of a parachute affects the speed at which it falls. Ask us what we found out! Here we are, proundly presenting our different sized parachutes that we made (minus the ones that we lost to the roof!)
We had a great day celebrating St. George’s Day and really enjoyed our afternoon tea! Thanks to all the parents who attended to show their support!
Today, Year 5 debated the motion that “Animals should have been used in World War 1”. This links to our new text in Literacy (War Horse by Michael Morpurgo) where we are reading about the poor horse, Joey, who gets sent to fight in the great war.
The children articulated their points extremely well and were able to respond and question the opposing point of view. After a vote, it was decided that animals should have been used in World War 1. Here is a photograph of our winning (and very persuasive!) debating team.
Thank you to all those who attended today’s St. Patrick’s Day coffee morning. A great time was had by all and lots of money was raised for school funds! Well done to the Year 5 children for being such attentive and professional waiters and waitresses!
On Thursday, Year 5 are hosting the annual St. Patrick’s Day coffee morning in order to raise money for the school. Please, please, please could you donate prizes for the raffle! Any gifts (big or small!) would be greatly appreciated. Please hand in to the school office or to Miss Frearson.

Literacy
We are having a punctuation and grammar focus week. We are learning lots of new things including how to use colons and semi colons and how to use brackets and dashes to indicate parenthesis. Ask us to explain when we use these and why!
Maths
We are moving on from fractions and will be revisiting multiplication this week. Get practising those times tables at home to help with this!
RE
We are continuing to learn all about Lent. Ask us what our promises are that we have made!
Science
Our forces topic will continue until the Easter break. This week, we are learning about the effects of gravity.
