Ship ahoy!

Hello Everyone,

Sadly this is my last blog as the Reception Teacher at All Souls. I have been so incredibly lucky to have had such an amazing class – they are truly lovely children and I know that Mrs McGovern is really looking forward to working with them next year in Year 1. Thank you so much for all of your support this year and Mrs Atwal would also like to join me in saying a huge thank you for all of your cards, presents and kind words. It has been a pleasure to work in such a caring and welcoming school. We hope you all have a fantastic Summer!

Love from

Miss Burns

Hello Everyone!

Our potatoes were dug up this week, scrubbed, chipped and boiled and  then quickly devoured by very eager children! We have had a bit of a pirate theme this week with lots of ‘aaaargh’s’ and ‘ahoy there’s!’ If you have any boxes we could use to make ships next week we would be very grateful if you could send them in. Next Friday 15th July we will be having our end of term pirate party – please come dressed as a pirate children. Finally please have a look at the videos of the children’s ‘under the ocean’ dance they have been practising in P.E. on the home page. Have a good weekend.

Hello Everyone!

Congratulations to Reception and Nursery for putting on such a great performance this morning. You should all be so proud of them – they have worked so hard and thank you so much for helping the children to learn and practice their words.

This week we dug up our lettuces and radishes and we were very impressed with the children’s sandwich making skills – they loved the fact they grew the veg, dug it up and then ate it. We are now looking forward to digging up and cooking our crop of potatoes.

Next week the children will be visiting their new classroom and meeting their new teacher ready for starting Year 1 in September. We will also be finishing off our topic with a bit of a pirate theme – ahoy me hearties! Have a good weekend.

Hello Everyone!

This week we have been continuing to find out about different sea creatures, and do art work related to this. Some of the stories  we have been reading are ‘Commotion in the Ocean’, ‘The Snail and the Whale’, ‘The Fish Who Could Wish’ and ‘Barry the Fish With Fish Fingers’. In Maths we have been learning about capacity – finding out how many cups of water different containers hold and finding out how many cubes fit in one of their shoes etc. The children had great fun with their  sponsored bounce on Friday – could they bring in any sponsor money next week please.

Our vegetables and herbs are thriving – our lettuces have grown massive so lettuce sandwiches/ salad will be on the classroom menu next week! In the next few weeks we will be preparing for our joint class assembly with Nursery – remember our assembly is on Friday 1st July. Finally, Dads – we hope you liked your Fathers’ Day cards and have a lovely Fathers’ Day on Sunday.

Under the Sea

By reception10th June 2016

Hello everyone,

Welcome to our last half term – the year has gone so quickly! Our trip to the Sea Life Centre was a great success, the children had a wonderful time and it was so good to see their enthusiasm and excitement. We saw amazing creatures and learnt many amazing facts about different sea creatures – the giant turtle and the stingrays were big favourites. Can I say a big thank you to our mums who came along to help and I’m sure they will agree that the children behaved brilliantly.

This week we have been researching and writing facts about different sea creatures using the internet, reading books with a sea theme and making fish and turtles in the creative area. Our fishy theme will continue for the next few weeks in preparation for our assembly on 1st July.

A big well done to the children for walking around to the classroom on their own in the mornings – we are very proud with how sensible they have been. Because the children are now preparing to move onto Year1, at dinnertime the children are now given a dinner plate which they carry on a tray instead of the dinner trays which they used to eat off – again they have done this very well and it has made them feel very grown up.

This week the children have been given spellings to learn. They will be given new spellings to learn every Monday and it would be very helpful if you could spend a couple of minutes each day to learn their words – the best method is for your child to read the word, cover it up, write the word and then check it.

Finally in preparation for September the children will need a school tracksuit for when they do outside P.E in Year 1.You can order your tracksuit on line on the school website or via the school office. Have a good weekend everyone!

Hello Everyone,

In P.E this half term the children have been retelling the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ through dance and movement and they had the opportunity to perform it to each other and to Mrs Quinn and Mr Cook on Thursday – they were very impressed by the children who were absolute stars.

In maths this week as well as doing work on doubling numbers we have also been looking at repeating patterns – they even made repeating patterns when they made their fruit kebabs which the children thoroughly enjoyed eating afterwards.

Next Thursday we are off to the Sea Life Centre which we are all very excited about. Please return the form about whether your child will be bringing their own packed lunch on Monday. Remember that Thursday will be the children’s last day before the half term break. Have a good weekend.

Hello everyone!

As you can see from our photos this week the children have had great fun making their own egg and cress sandwiches all from scratch! They made their own bread, used the eggs from our school chickens and grew their own cress and have gained a lot of learning from this experience. Our potatoes, tomatoes, lettuces, strawberries, radishes and herbs are all growing very nicely too! Next week we will be focussing on fruit, based on the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’ – so one of the activities the children want to do is make fruit kebabs. Have a good weekend.

Hello everyone!

This week we have been continuing our keeping fit and healthy theme and talking about healthy and unhealthy food. We are growing cress seeds at the moment and have collected eggs from the school chickens so next week we are going to make our own bread rolls and will be making and eating egg and cress rolls. Hopefully the weather will be warmer next week so we can plant our lettuces, radishes and herbs and start off our tomatoes – who said Spring was here?!

After half term the children will be walking around to their classroom by themselves or with a friend or brother or sister. In preparation for this we are encouraging the children to say goodbye to parents on the playground or in the corridor outside the classroom – it would be great if you could support us with this.

Finally have a great bank holiday weekend and lets hope we get some warm sunny weather!

Welcome to the Summer Term! I hope you all had a great Easter break and the children are raring to go for our final term – where has the time gone?! This week we have been reading and doing work based on ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ which the children have been very enthusiastic about – so if the doorbell rings remember he is a very friendly tiger! In P.E the children have enjoyed using dance and gesture to tell well known stories and in maths we have been describing position and learning about ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd,3rd…). Our main theme this term is food and keeping healthy and our Termly letter outlining what we will be learning in each area of the curriculum will be sent out next Friday. Finally we will be going on a class trip with Nursery to the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham on Thursday 26th May. We need five helpers to come on the trip with us so if any parents( or Grandparents) are able to come with us please let me know next week.

Yours sincerely

Miss Burns

Dear Parents,

This week the children have been continuing to write their bean diary – we definitely have magic beans in our classroom, they have really sprouted up! I will take the plants home for the holiday and then when we come back they will be planted outside. Yesterday the children did some beautiful observational drawings of daffodils – Spring was definitely in the air.

What a lovely way to end our term with an Easter bonnet parade this morning – the children looked wonderful – thank you for helping to create such beautiful l and imaginative hats. The children were also very excited as the Easter bunny had  left eggs in the prayer garden for them to find afterwards. The children have worked really hard this term – we are very proud of them. We hope you all enjoy your Easter break and we will see you back at school on Monday 11th April.

Yours sincerely

Miss Burns
