All Souls vs St Augustine’s

20th November 2013Mr R YOUSON

The Year 5/6 football team played their 4th league game of the season on Monday and managed to battle their way to victory. All Souls’ dominated the game from start to finish creating numerous chances, but it was St Augustine’s who took the lead catching us on the break just before half time to take a one goal advantage. The team however did not drop their heads and kept on battling throughout the second half. Eventually all our pressure paid off and a super long range effort from Callum found its way into the net. One goal soon became two as Daniel latched onto a through ball and finished coolly, with his shot going in off the post. The victory was sealed when Patrick ran through on goal and slotted the ball past their goalkeeper to put us into a 3-1 lead. This is how the match ended, it was a great battling performance from both sides and now puts us in second place in the league table. Well done boys!

Man of the Match: Daniel

Next game: Thursday 21st November vs Christ the King

Cross Country

19th November 2013Mr R YOUSON

A big well done to the Year 5 and 6 boys who took part in the first cross country meet of the year at Keresley Grange School. It was a cold Saturday morning on a course close to a mile long with 38 schools and over 300 competitors taking part, this however did not phase the boys who were full of energy from the off each running to the best of their abilities. Jude headed the All Souls’ team finishing a superb 14th closely followed by Ben in 21st. The other 4 boys were not far behind and managed to overtake many of the other children in the final sprint to the finish line. Well done boys!

2013-11-16 10.24.38

There will be more cross country meetings for both the girls and boys after the new year.

Year 3 Autumn Newsletter

Welcome to Year 3 and the beginning of Key Stage 2. Ms Croarken, Mrs Swain and I will be working with your children.  I hope that we can work in partnership to encourage your child to try their best and be proud of their achievements this year.  We have high expectations for the children and hope they also take their learning seriously making the most of the opportunities they will have.

Parents’ evening is on October 8th when we shall meet and discuss how your child is settling in to Year 3.

Here is a summary of the curriculum and events happening this term.

Reading – Your child may change their reading book whenever they have finished, there is no set day for this.  Thank you for signing the new reading journal that your child brings home; which is to encourage the children to read a variety of texts. This can include magazines, comics, newspapers and anything else that you think suitable for your child. The children will also be visiting the library. Please ensure your child brings their Reading Journal in each Monday. We would encourage your child to bring in their reading books every day as we are keen on supporting children read to help each child progress.  Reading aloud to someone is also a different skill from silent reading and encourages the person reading with the child to ask questions about the text and engage the child in discussion.

Numeracy

The new Numeracy Framework divides the term into 5 blocks of learning;- Counting, partitioning and calculating; Securing number facts and understanding shape; Handling data and measures; Calculating, measuring and understanding shape; Securing number facts calculation and relationships. The children will also be encouraged to develop their mental maths skills. The emphasis this year will be on using and applying the concepts they have learned in the curriculum to problem solving.  Times tables knowledge is also of the utmost importance – beginning a secure knowledge of the 2x, 5x and 10x tables with corresponding division facts leading on to the 3x and 4x tables.

For games the children will be practising their basketball skills with Tall Paul and their dance skills with Miss Kelleher based on dances through time.

On Thursdays the children will be working through Orientation skills followed by Invasion Games.

Please note – PE days are Tuesday and Thursday before half-term and Monday and Thursday after half-term.  Could you ensure your child has their PE kit in school, clearly labelled.  For Health and Safety reasons, it is not advisable for children to wear earrings.  Each child should have their school track suit as their outdoor P.E. kit.

Themed Work

The children will be covering the unit Coventry Our City

The History part of the work will include a journey through time (helped by Dr. Who) to find out about Saxon, Norman and Medieval life in Coventry.  This will include a visit to the Priory Centre, Holy Trinity Church and the Herbert.

The Geography aspect will be to find out about the City, it’s geography and the change in land use over time along with a change in industry. This will include a walk to the new Alvis Retail Park.

Art and Technology will include designing and making a TARDIS console for the 12th Doctor and building the City Walls and Gates.

Homework

The children will receive homework on a Friday and it should be completed and returned on the following Wednesday.  The work will include either literacy or numeracy we have covered in the week or a research project that will last two or three weeks.  If there is a problem completing a piece of homework we do run a homework club on Wednesday lunchtime in Mrs McGovern’s classroom, or just see me after school or drop me a note.

In order for your child to arrive home with the correct sweatshirt or cardigan or to find it if lost, PLEASE label all your child’s school uniform.

We look forward to working with you,

Mrs Scullion, Ms Croarken and Mrs Swain.

WELCOME TO THE NEW TEAM

IMG_1194

Over the summer all our vegetables have been growing and we have been able to harvest beans, carrots, marrows and tomatoes.  Some of the Club went to St. Christopher’s for a Harvest assembly.  St. John’s School, Allesley Primary and Allesley Hall Schools also joined us – the produce was going to be given to the Food Bank.  We were in the paper on Friday.

Sports Day and Colour Wars Pictures

16th July 2013Mr R YOUSON

All the children from Nursery to Year 6 had a fantastic sports and colour wars day. The scorching day started with Colour Wars where each class split into either Yellow Wallabies or a Red Lions, they then took part in various games from basketball to obstacle courses. It ended in a nail biting finish with the Yellow Wallabies taking victory by just 150 points.

In the afternoon family and friends came to watch the obstacle and sprint races and they were not left disappointed.  Every child took part and had the crowd urging them over the line in some very tight finishes. There was even time for an All Sorts staff race at the end.
