Day 5 Snake and Egg!

On Friday we were very lucky and had the opportunity to meet a snake. Some of us were very brave and held her. She felt very smooth but you could feel her scales.

On Friday afternoon we held an egg challenge.  We worked in groups to design a case to protect an egg if it was dropped from a window upstairs.  One of the groups egg didn’t get out of the classroom!  Of the 5 other groups 2 managed to build a case that protected their egg and they survived the drop.  Well done to them. We all had fun and it was a great way to end Science Week.

Science Week – Day 4

To solve this question we used two different flavours of mints and diet cola and normal cola.  We found out that it didnt matter what mint you used but that the diet cola went higher.

Week 3 – Part 2

We made some predictions over where chocolate would melt quickest.  Some of the children thought that they needed to be in the fridge, overs thought  or in a cupboard and other children suggested on the heater. We found out that the chocolate needed to be somewhere hot.  the white chocolate and the dark chocolate melted first.  The milk chocolate took longer because we think it has more sugar in it.  The children then had a piece of chocolate and decided we must be warm because it melted in their mouths.

Science Week – Day 3!

Food experiments

In our first experiment we used Skittles to make a rainbow pattern.

The children thought about how the colours appeared and spread. They realised that the colour dye had come off the bottom of the sweets and spread in the water.

Science Week – Day Two!

We thought about how we could test which drink was the best for our teeth. We used chalk because we talked about it being similar to teeth in structure. The children all gave their predictions to what was going to be the best and what would happen to the chalk.

We tested the chalk in milk, water, cola and orange juice. When we put the chalk into the cola and it fizzed some of the children that had originally thought cola would be best changed their minds.

We are going to check the results later in the week.

Science Week

We set out to solve this problem.

The children came up with lots of ideas. Finn said that the flowers suck up the water in their stems. James said they need water and light. We talked about how we could test this. We put a flower in water in the light, one in the light without water, one in the dark with water and one in the dark without water. We are going to check these during the week.

We have put some food colouring into water to see if the flowers do take up the water through their stems. We discussed what we might see and which colour might change the flowers first. We cant wait to find out!

World Book Week

The children really enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day in their favourite character costumes or their pyjamas. We entered the competition to draw a character from our favourite book and designed and made a book mark. Well done to George and Evie who were our class runner ups and to Aine who won with her picture of Ariel.

Next week is Science Week.  We will be conducting a science experiment every day and dressing up in mad science outfits on Friday.  Keep a look out online to see what we are experimenting with each day.

3d Shapes

This week we have been exploring 3d Shapes.  We have looked at cones, cubes, spheres, cuboids and pyramids.  The children have been bringing in things from home that are the same shape as the one we are looking at. We have also played lots of shape games.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We have been continuing to look at where we live and finding our homes on a map of Coventry.  We are encouraging the children to know their address.  They are beginning to understand it is important to know this in case they get lost.

The children really enjoyed the visit from the Bird man Alan and learnt a lot about birds of prey.  It was an experience to have an eagle fly over your head!

When we come back  it is Book Week and Reception will be joining in  with the dressing up,. This year it can be a favourite book character or pyjamas.

Subtraction, St Valentine and Exploring Music and Song.

We had a great time putting our dance lessons to good use at our St Valentine’s disco. There were some great moves on show.

We have been exploring technology and thinking about how to stay safe online. We completed shape games on the I Pad.

In mathematics we have been completing subtraction number sentences, we used the number squares to practising taking away.  Some of us then showed our understanding by completing subtraction worksheets independently.  We are getting very clever!

In our expressive arts lesson we have been working in groups to change the words to a familiar song.  We have some video clips of this that we hope to be able to show on our blog, keep looking out for them.

We have a lot of coughs and colds and runny noses.  We have run out of tissues so would be grateful  if you could donate a box to help keep us germ free.

Next week we are looking forward to the Bird man assembly and also a tennis taster session.   We break up on Friday for half term.

Sharing and turn taking

We had a very busy week writing sentences, learning about addition and all about the Presentation in the Temple. We ended the week playing games. This was fun but also a learning experience because the children had to sort themselves out in groups, taking turns and sharing. Some of them managed this very well.

Next week we will be exploring subtraction, writing and learning about how to keep safe on the internet.
