What a week!
Year 1 have been very busy this week making play dough, hunting for different types of leaves and, this afternoon we travelled back in time to experience what a trip to the shops would have been like for our grandparents when they were young. We had a sweetshop, chemist, greengrocers, bakery and a butchers. The children loved creating their own shopping lists and role playing shop keepers.
Our netball team made us so proud today, demonstrating great sportsmanship and this terms school values. They played a brilliant match and all their hard work in training is showing!
This week in year 1 we have been exploring forest school. We used our senses to learn more about our outdoor environment. We then wrote some fantastic sentences in English about what we could hear, smell, feel, see and taste.
In history this week we explored the question ‘Did Granny have an Xbox?’ – the children shared their own grandparents stories before exploring some of the toys their grandparents might have played with when they were 5. We had had a go at using chalk to create pictures, building our own toys with Lego as well as outdoor activities like hopscotch, skipping and hula hooping.
Today the children have enjoyed becoming teachers!
Firstly, thank you for the support over the weekend in helping the children to have conversations with their grandparents about was life was like for them when they were little.
Today the children enjoyed sharing their stories and pictures with each other. We have all learnt SO much about the lives of all our grandparents (including that All Souls used to have toilets on the playground!)
We have had a very busy week settling into life in Year One!
We have spent lots of time recapping our sounds that the children learnt in phonics last year. We have also done lots of activities in maths to practice our number recognition, formation and counting.
We have enjoyed spending time outside appreciating all of God’s creations by identifying and drawing them.
Additionally, we kicked off this terms science topic ‘plants’ by observing closely and drawing different plants within our school environment. We also explored different types of leaves and had a go at painting our own.
We have also enjoyed exploring the new books in our classroom by reading with our friends.
We are looking forward to a new week and the new opportunities it will bring.
