Reception – Summer Term 2021 Information

By Mr A Cooke7th May 2021

Please note that the Reception Class page has been updated, to include the following information and details of our curriculum and activities this term.  This will replace the usual Termly Class Newsletter.

Summer Term 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to the Summer Term.  We are very pleased to be back in school and are looking forward to things getting back to as near normal as possible, for the children.

Literacy

We will be focusing on our phonic skills.  This will help your child to continue to progress in their reading and writing skills. The children will start to bring home a list of the ‘tricky’ words that they need to learn.  These are the words that do not follow the phonic rules and need to be taught alongside the phonic programme.  Some of the words will be the same words we practised during lockdown.  We have found that some of the children have forgotten them and others are forgetting to use them when writing sentences, so the extra practise we hope will help.

Mathematics

We are continuing to consolidate number knowledge to 10 and then moving onto 20.

The children are learning to count, subtilize, add and subtract, know one more and one less, double, halve and understand number patterns.  Focusing and becoming secure in numbers to 10 will help your child to understand mathematical concepts in the years ahead.

PSED/Understanding the World

We are starting the term looking at how we can keep fit, healthy and safe.  The children will be finding out about road safety, internet safety and stranger safety. We are going to explore what they need to eat to be healthy and how to look after our teeth.  We will be exercising and thinking about how to keep fit and well.

During the second half of the term we will be looking at travel, places around the world, where our families come from and comparing similarities and differences between countries.

 RE

We will be continuing to look at Easter and Pentecost.  We will be celebrating Mary during the month of May. The values and virtues during this half term are loving and compassionate.  We will be helping the children to think about how they can be more loving and compassionate in their lives.

General Information

With the weather warming up please can you make sure your child has a sunhat in school and has sun cream on in the morning.  If you provide a sun cream for school we will help your child to apply it at lunch time.

Reading Books will come out on Monday and will need to return on Friday.

Please remember that Tuesday is PE day and the children will need to wear their PE uniform.

Dates for your diary.

Monday 17th May Height and Weight in school.

Monday31st May to Friday 4th June School closed for half term.

Keep fit challange

By Mrs S JILKS5th May 2021

This week we are thinking about how we keep fit and well.  We made an obstacle course in the outdoor area,  The children took it in turns to see how quickly they could complete the course.  Well done to Dougie who completed it in the shortest time.

Fruit from around the World

By Mrs S JILKS28th April 2021

This week we have been thinking about the different foods we eat.  Yesterday we did observational drawings of some fruit from different places around the world.  The children looked carefully at the fruit and then drew them; thinking carefully about what colours to use.  Today we looked at where the food came from and then cut them up to taste them.  We made a Tally Chart showing our favourite fruit.

Reading update

By Mrs S JILKS25th April 2021

We are pleased to be able to say that the Reception children will be bringing home a reading book this week.  All children who have returned their reading books will be given a book on Monday.  This book needs to be returned, in their plastic folder, on Friday.     The children will also read in school but the extra reading at home will help support their learning.

This week will we be finding out what foods we need to eat to keep healthy, tasting a variety of exotic  fruit, we will be counting out objects to 20 and learning about one more and one less and  thinking about how the disciples felt at Easter.

We have planted potatoes, spinach, beetroot, lettuce, radish, and rocket. We helped to sow the seeds and now need to remember to water them!  We also planted some flower bulbs into our pots in the outdoor area.  We are looking forward to having some lovely colourful plants.  Indoors we have planted a sunflower seed.  We are going to bring these home when they start to grow and plant them in our gardens.  There will be a prize for the tallest flower!

It’s great to be back!

By Mrs S JILKS14th March 2021

We have been exploring symmetry, sharing and turn taking, thinking about how we can help others during Lent, finding out about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly and  making cookies and cards for Mother’s Day.  What a busy week!  The children all did really well and settled back in with ease.

Ash Wednesday – We begin our Lenten Journey

By Miss R Corkerry17th February 2021

Today marks the beginning of our Lenten journey. Next week, when we are back to learning, we will be having daily reflections about this special season which will be accessed through Google Classroom. Please find below a copy of the Lenten calendar from Walk with Me, do your best at home to live out some of these daily challenges.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of reflection where we reflect on who we are and the people we aspire to be. Today and in the coming weeks, we aim to focus on our relationship with God, often through choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of ourselves for others. As we think about these promises, let us think of making a true sacrifice as an individual or as a family to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

This special time marks the beginning and the end. We came from love, we live in love, we return to love. May our Lenten journey as our All Souls’ family be a sharing of this love with all creation by opening our hearts to Him in trust. May our Lenten promise focus on creating in us quiet places where God can refresh and heal us, and we can come and rest awhile.

May we remember that ‘we are dust and to dust we shall return.’

Week 2 Wk beginning 11th January 2021

Hello

I hope you are all safe and well and that the activities last week were easy to follow.  Please do not worry about emailing me if you need any more guidance on the activities for the week. I will be placing the learning under each area of learning and these can be completed as you choose throughout the week.

Remember that the children are grouped 1, 2, and 3.  Some of the activities are for all groups, some for one group and others differentiated.

Communication and Language.

Groups 2 and 3

Play I spy.  Explain how you play and then model the first sound for your child.  Choose something that is easy for the first try.  Encourage your children to ask questions for clues rather than just providing one word answers. After a few turns ask your child to have a turn.  If knowing what sounds words begin with is a little too difficult then use the game below.

Group 3

Play I Spy but use colours.  Choose an object in the room and say I Spy with my little eye something that is the colour……….

Writing/Reading/Phonics

Group 2/1

.Find the high frequency words in the pack.  We are going to practise reading and writing these weekly.

This week please work on the first 5 on the sheet. I would suggest that you write them larger on a sheet of paper and first work on reading them.  Later in the week after looking closely at each word ask you child to have a go at writing them.

Group 3 Read the first 5 words on the sheet.

All Groups Complete the Phase 2 pictures and captions matching activity week 2

Daily Phonics All Groups

Please sign onto the Phonics Play site.  It is being provided free by using log in  : Jan21

In school we use the Letters and Sounds scheme to teach phonics. The games on this site we use in school and you can change the phonemes (sounds) you need to cover. The parent’s page also covers some guidance on how phonemes are taught.

This week sign in and then go to resources and then Phase 2. Click on flash cards speed trial.  The children like to see if they can beat their last score.

Please feel free to play any of the other games on the site in Phase 2.

Weekly

Group 1 practise writing whole name using your name card.  Group 2 practise writing your name without your name card and on the lines in the book.  Group 3 practise writing your first name using your name card.

Sign onto Oxford Owl.

All Groups read and complete the activities for Can You See Me?  Group 2 Also read and complete the activities for Jack. The sounds in this book will be fairly new to your child so they may need a little more help completing this.

During the week find different ways for your child to count out 5.  Can they see that 1 and 4 make 5, 2 and 3 also make 5 etc.

Group 2

Start to introduce + and = into the language.

Use a piece of paper with a space then + and space and then = use the numbers to 5 to place into the spaces to make the number sentence.   Can your child copy the number sentence?  Words to use: add addition makes plus together equals total

Understanding the World/|Pshe

Use the Twinkl website to explain via their power point about our 5 senses.

This week we are going to be looking at our sense of sight. Talk about how useful our eyes are, how we look after them, why some people need to where glasses etc.  Play some games to show how we need our eyes.  Place a blindfold around your child and ask them to walk across the room to the door.( some risk assessment needed!) Can they see how hard that is to do without their sight?  Put a drink or a treat in front of them and ask them to try to drink/eat them?

Place some objects in a bag without your child seeing.  Can they put their hand into the bag and tell you what they feel?  Do they realise that it is harder without being able to see the object?

Put a piece of paper in front of your blindfolded child. Ask them to try to write their name.

Group 2/1 Discuss ways in which people have help when they vision problems and how these help people live their lives. (Thinking about braille sounds/books, sticks, guide dogs)

RE All Groups.

We have starting to think about our place in the Church Community.  To help the children understand this we are starting with thinking about our family and our place in it.  Can you talk about your family and how it is made up. Discuss immediate family and then extended.  Can your child draw a picture of their family.

Group 2 label your family picture.

Thank you

We made it!

By Mrs S JILKS22nd December 2020

We have made it to the end of a very different first term.  There were lots of gaps to fill, changes to how school looks and works and new ideas to be introduced.   We are very pleased with how the children in Reception have adapted to challenges; you should all be very proud of them.  We still have some gaps to fill but all the children have made progress.

Homework over Christmas is to read the books, continue to practise writing numbers which is still causing problems for some children and to practise doing up zips.

Have a lovely, holy, peaceful Christmas with your families.   Stay safe.

Ms Croarken and Mrs Jilks.
