This week is British Science Week.

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. The theme this year is JOURNEYS.

To celebrate, we have lots of exciting things coming up over the next two weeks, such as creating our own class question and going on a journey to find out the answer to it, creating posters to enter the annual BSA competition, taking part in a whole school quiz and of course a little bit of fancy dress to end it all on Friday 22nd March!

Pancake excitement!

This week we looked at how we make pancakes.  In literacy we wrote the list of ingredients and instructions of how we make pancakes.  Unfortunately Mrs Jilks didn’t follow them correctly and made the oil too hot. This set off the fire alarms and we had a trip to the top of the playground.   It was all good practise!

In mathematics we have been working on the language of time.  We were so good we went on to looking at o’clock and half past on the clock face.

We went to church with our prayer friends on Ash Wednesday and were really well behaved during the service.   Well done to all.

Thursday we all dressed up for book week and completed fun activities around books.

We ended the week looking at different types of technology and talking about what we use them for.

Lent

Lorcan, James and Pierce led a beautiul and well-prepared prayer service for Year 6 and Reception today.

They explained clearly to their prayer friends what Lent is all about it, read and explained relevant scripture and included some lovely prayers. They were also given the chance to discuss what they had decided to give up this Lent. Reception listened so well and were able to answer lots of questions after.

Both classes really enjoy this special time they spend together every week.

World Book Day Letter

World Book Day!

Dear Parents,

 

Thursday 7th March is World Book Day; a day to help to foster a love of reading in our children. To celebrate this day at All Souls’, we have decided to have a dress up and activity day. Children are invited to dress up as a book character for the day (teaching staff will also be dressing up as a character from their favourite book!). During the course of the day, children will take part in a variety of activities both in their classrooms and across school.

Our annual competition this year is for children to produce a representation of their favourite story on a rock (think Isla’s Stones or Allesley Rocks). The rocks need to be brought into school on World Book Day and will be displayed in the hall for all children to view. A winner will be chosen from each class, and they will receive a £5.00 book token.

From Wednesday 20th-26th March we are holding a Scholastic Book Fair, in the school hall, where children and their families can browse and purchase books from £2.99. Children will also have been given a £1.00 Book Token to spend. Once we have made £300 worth of sales, school can access at least 25% of the amount to spend on books for our class reading areas. We hope that you will support this venture.

World Book Day

This week we have been making the most of the sunshine and took our learning outdoors.  We have a garage and car showroom and lots of activities to support our mark making and mathematic skills.  In the classroom we have now got a theatre in the role play area. Some photographs of the week are below.  We will be taking part in World Book Day along with the rest of the school.  Children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character. Staff will also be dressing up for the day.  We will be  judging a rock painting competition to see which rock has the best  representation of a favourite story and a prize will be given to the best in each class.  Please send the rocks into school on Wednesday or Thursday morning.

On Friday your child will have brought home a list of new tricky words. Please would you help your child to read and practise spelling them, this really helps with their independent writing.

 

Non-uniform dates for your diary!

As we have a few celebrations coming up, we have invited children to come into school in non-uniform on the following dates:

Thursday 7th March – World Book Day – Dressed as their favourite character from a book (£1 donation to the School Building Fund)

(please donate cakes to be sold during the coffee morning)

Please remember, these are all optional but if you do wish to take part, there are some great ideas online that are inexpensive and easy to create.

Reading to our prayer friends

As a reward for writing stunning narratives and as an opportunity to read their stories aloud for a real audience, Year 6 visited their prayer friends in Reception today. Reception listened so well to their stories which were read beautifully and both classes really enjoyed the experience.

 

Chinese New Year

We celebrated Chinese New Year in lots of different ways. We listened to instructions and made a Chinese drum, tasted Chinese food, listened to the story of how the years were named and watched a film about how a family celebrated. Below are some photos of our week.

In mathematics we have been looking at the pattern in numbers. The children were able to place the number where it should go following the number pattern of adding ten.

We have also been learning how to work together to complete an activity. We were very proud when we achieved our aim.
