World Book Day 2022

By Ella Hands4th February 2022

World Book Day - Awareness Days Events Calendar 2022

World Book Day, which takes place on Thursday, 3rd March, 2022, celebrates the joy and value of books and the art of reading. The worldwide events of the day are particularly aimed at children. The message this year is ‘You are a reader’. We, in school, along with your support, want to promote reading for pleasure on World Book Day and, of course, all year round.

Your child will be issued with a £1 World Book Day token. This can either be exchanged for one of twelve special £1 World Book Day books, or it can be used towards the cost of any book or audiobook priced at £2.99 or more. The token can be redeemed at most major supermarkets and bookshops. Vouchers are valid from 17th February, 2022, to 27th March, 2022. On World Book Day, before and after school, there will be an Usborne Book Fayre. Books will be priced from £2 upwards and children will have the opportunity to put their book tokens towards the cost of a book. Books will be available to purchase on the day or order during the week commencing 28th February. Every book that is bought or ordered at the fayre will help the school to obtain free books. More details regarding the book fayre will be sent nearer the time.

On Thursday, 3rd March, your child may attend school dressed as his/her favourite book character. Alternatively, they may attend school wearing their pyjamas. For this privilege, the children will be asked to donate one pound and the money raised will be used towards helping to purchase new books for our reading scheme. During the morning, children throughout the school will enter an in-house competition. Children in YN, YR, Y1, Y2 and Y3 will complete an activity, which for many will be a written activity, based on a book that will be read to them. Children in Y4, Y5 and Y6 will be given the start of a story which they will then have to finish. All pieces of work will be entered into an in-house competition and one winner will be chosen from each class. Other activities will be on offer during the day.

The joys and benefits of reading are enormous and we, in school, hope to continue to encourage and enthuse your child with a love for reading that will last well beyond World Book Day.

Thank you for your support.

The Masked Reader – Day One

By Ella Hands1st March 2021

This week, as part of our World Book Day celebrations, we will be running a ‘Masked Reader’ competition. Each day, a video will be posted of a different member of staff reading an extract from a children’s book. However, the staff member will have disguised his/her face and voice. Each day, it is your task to use the clues given to you to work out who is behind the disguise. Children in Years 1-6 will need to post their answer on Google Classroom and children in Reception can email Mrs Jilks their answer. The names of the children who correctly identify the member of staff each day will be put into a prize draw at the start of next week.

Tomorrow you will find out who is behind today’s disguise.

Here is today’s video:

Clues:

1) This person likes to wear black clothing.

2) This person has been a member of staff at All Souls for several years now.

3) This person is married.

Year Three’s R.E. Homework

By Ella Hands24th September 2020

As part of their R.E. unit entitled ‘Belonging’, Year Three are learning about the sacrament of baptism. The children have been asked to find out information about their own baptisms. They have been asked the following questions:

  • Where and when were you baptised?
  • What was the name of the priest who baptised you?
  • What name or names were you given at your baptism?
  • Who are your godparents and how are they related to you?
  • What clothing did you wear for your baptism?
  • What special memories do you, your parents and godparents have of your baptismal day?

Please can I ask parents to email me a copy of your child’s answers to these questions and any photographs you may wish to send in, in order to avoid the need for items to be brought into school. Please can these be sent before or by Monday, 28th September. I will print out any information and photographs sent so that the children will be able to share what they have learnt about their special day with the others in their class during our lesson on Tuesday, 29th September. My email address is [email protected]

Thank you for your support.

Thirteenth Week of Home Learning for Year Four

7th July 2020Ella Hands

It is hard to believe that there is only one full week of school left until the end of this academic year. Week by week, the children in Year 4 have continued to impress us with the completion of Home Learning tasks and we are very proud of them.

As usual, Roman has worked extremely hard. He used his neatest, joined up handwriting to copy out the poem, ‘The Crocodile’, before drawing his own image of the crocodile. He practised spelling words by playing ‘Hangman’ and scored full marks on the spelling test. Roman answered reading comprehension questions accurately and he demonstrated that he knows when to use ‘its’ and ‘it’s’. In R.E., he drew a lovely picture of Father Paul before listing some of his responsibilities and then, in art, he created a wonderful collage of the activities he has undertaken during this period of lockdown. Also, he completed various mathematics activities. Well done, Roman!

Lily has also been busy. In English, after watching a short animation of the children’s game ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’, she described the character of ‘Paper’. In science, she chose to research the ‘snow leopard’ which is an endangered species. Lily wrote about why the snow leopard is endangered and how we can help support this animal. She, too, scored full marks on the spelling test and, in art, she created a wonderful collage. Good girl, Lily!

Home Learning Update for Year Four

5th July 2020Ella Hands

Year 4 have continued to work extremely hard over the last couple of weeks.

I am so impressed with the standard of work that I received from Charlie. It is evident, from looking through the pictures of his work, that he has been trying hist best and, as a result of this, has produced excellent work.

In R.E., Charlie wrote a thoughtful prayer to Mary asking her to look after his friends and family during this difficult time. He decorated it beautifully with a set of rosary beads and flowers. Then, Charlie shared his prayer with members of his family.

Also, Charlie decided to learn more about our class saint, Padre Pio. He presented the information that he found clearly.

Charlie drew an image to illustrate one of Jesus’s sayings, ‘I am the Door.’ From looking at the image he has drawn, it is clear that Charlie understands what Jesus means by this.

In English, Charlie wrote a Kennings poem about one member of staff at school. I think that he has described this staff member perfectly and his poem made me smile when I read it.

Also, Charlie wrote a ‘Lockdown’ acrostic poem. Within his poem, he has told us some of the activities that he has enjoyed during this period of time. I particularly like how he has written each line in a different colour. It made me think of a rainbow which has become a well-known symbol of this time.

In Science, Charlie created a factfile about an endangered species. He decided to find out about pandas. I agree with him that we must all try to use less paper in order to help protect this species.

Charlie created a great piece of art work which he is proud of.

In every piece of work of Charlie’s that I have seen, he has used beautifully neat handwriting. Look at how well he has written the poem ‘The Crocodile’ in pen. Well done, Charlie! I am very pleased with your efforts!

Ffion has been busy creating a collage of some of the things that she has been doing during lockdown. I like how she has used a mixture of black and white and colour photographs. This piece of art work will be something that Ffion can keep and look back on.

Like Charlie, Eva has been finding out about an endangered species but she chose to research elephants. I think the elephant that Eva has drawn is superb and she has given us a few ways in which we can help to save elephants. Good girl, Eva!

Olivier has been trying hard to use his neatest handwriting. In maths, he has been practising his recall of multiplication and division facts of the 12 times tables. In RE, he studied the roles and responsibilities of a priest and, in English, he has accurately answered comprehension questions. Well done, Olivier!

Alicja always works incredibly hard and she produced some great work this week.

Oliver has been working hard. He has answered reading comprehension questions well and he has demonstrated   that he knows and understanding the difference between ‘its’ and ‘it’s’. In R.E., Oliver drew a lovely picture of Father Paul before listing some of the things that he is responsible for. He has practised playing the guitar with his brother, Frank, and he has been exercising with him and his sister, Julia. Good boy, Oliver!

Tenth Week of Home Learning for Year Four

By Ella Hands21st June 2020

We have enjoyed looking at the work that some of Year 4 have sent in this week.

As well as completing all of the home learning tasks set, Ffion baked some cookies (which look delicious) and she went on lots of walks with her sisters. I am very impressed with her photography skills – I think that she has taken some lovely pictures of various flowers. Well done, Ffion!

Lily has had yet another busy week. She practised the weekly spellings before scoring full marks on the spelling test. Also, she answered comprehension questions well, and she planned a route around her local area which she could walk or cycle. In R.E., she decided to learn more about our class saint, Padre Pio. Keep up the great work, Lily!

Roman has worked hard. In art, he drew a picture of an eye which looks realistic. In maths, he compared and ordered numbers. In grammar and punctuation, he practised identifying and using articles and determiners. After measuring out the length of the large intestine and the small intestine, Roman was surprised to learn that the small intestine is actually longer than the large one. Also, he answered comprehension questions and scored full marks on the spelling test. Another excellent week, Roman!

Ninth Week of Home Learning for Year Four

14th June 2020Ella Hands

Year 4 begins every week with a class Zoom call. This week, the children were invited to share one of their talents with the rest of the class. We were lucky enough to see an array of talents on display – golfing, gymnastics, singing, dancing, magic tricks, piano and guitar playing. For all involved, this was a very enjoyable way to start the week.

Some of the children in the class have had a very productive week. Olivier retold the story of Pentecost, focusing on how the disciples felt before and after receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. Also, he practised spelling words for the weekly spelling test and wrote an acrostic poem on Coronavirus. Well done, Olivier!

Olivia tried hard to use her neatest handwriting to write out the prayer ‘Come Holy Spirit’ which she then decorated beautifully. Also, she wrote a Kennings poem based on one member of staff. Can you guess who Olivia has described?

Lily has worked hard. Like Olivia, she wrote a Kennings poem. Also, she answered comprehension questions and she practised spelling words for the weekly spelling test, which she scored full marks on yet again. Good girl, Lily!

Roman created a word search containing various scientific words and, in handwriting, he practised certain letter joins. Like Lily, he scored full marks on the weekly spelling test. Well done, Roman!

Jackson thoroughly enjoyed drawing a picture of an eye. I think his drawing is very realistic.

As always, Ffion worked hard this week. I especially enjoyed reading the piece of writing that she did for the ‘100 Word Challenge’. She definitely left me wanting to read more! Also, Ffion researched the life of St. Cecilia and, in reading, she answered comprehension questions. She enjoyed planning a cycle route around her local area which she then followed on her bike. Good Girl, Ffion!

Alicja continued to work extremely well. In grammar and punctuation, she used articles and determiners and, in reading, she answered comprehension questions. In R.E., she researched the life of a saint and, in maths, she ordered and compared numbers. Keep up the great effort, Alicja!

Lottie enjoyed discovering that the small intestine is actually longer than the large intestine. Using a hose pipe, she measured out the length of the small intestine and the large intestine.

James Clancy has worked hard. All of his written tasks are well-presented and completed to a high standard. Also, he enjoyed helping his brother, Joseph, create a volcano – they look quite the scientists! Well done, James!

Eighth Week of Home Learning For Year Four

By Ella Hands6th June 2020

Some of the pupils in Year 4 have started the final half-term of this academic year well.

Patrick has written a ‘Lockdown’ acrostic poem. He has used his neatest handwriting and presented it very well. The lines of his poem will ring true with many of us! well done, Patrick.

As always, Lily has been working hard. In maths, she has been reading and writing Roman numerals and, in English, she has been accurately answering comprehension questions. Lily has continued to score full marks in the weekly spelling test and she has been practising certain letter joins in handwriting. Good girl, Lily!

Roman has been applying himself well. It is pleasing to see that he too is scoring full marks in the spelling test and it is good to see the improvement in his handwriting. Keep up the great effort, Roman!

Alicja has continued to work incredibly well, ensuring that she has completed all tasks set. I particularly enjoyed reading your ‘Thank You NHS’ acrostic poem, Alicja.

Week Seven of Home Learning for Year Four

By Ella Hands19th May 2020

Niamh has been working hard over the last few weeks. She has sent us some pieces of work that she is proud of. I particularly like the triptych that Niamh has drawn. I think her drawing of the Risen Christ and the disciples on the road to Emmaus is excellent. The Kennings poem that she has written about one member of staff also made me smile. Can you guess who Niamh is describing?

Also, Patrick has written a colourful Kennings poem. Are you able to work out which member of staff is being described?

Patrick has tried really hard to use his neatest handwriting when writing words containing the joins that he has practised. Well done, Patrick!

Ffion has been busy at work and at play. Not only did she manage to complete all of the home learning tasks set but she has also been on lots of bike rides and has been playing in the paddling pool. Can you guess which member of staff Ffion’s Kennings poem is about?

Well done and happy half-term, Year 4!

Sixth Week of Home Learning for Year Four

By Ella Hands12th May 2020

The Year 4 children have continued to impress us with all of their wonderful work.

During the month of May, we pay homage to Mary, our Blessed Mother. Patrick wrote a thoughtful prayer to Mary asking for her help during this difficult time. He decorated it beautifully with a set of rosary beads.

Roman has also chosen to focus his prayer on asking Mary to help those who are suffering from Coronavirus and the doctors and nurses who are caring for them. I particularly like the lovely rainbow that he has drawn to illustrate his prayer.

Lily-Rose has also shared her lovely prayer to Mary. She prays that this pandemic will end soon. We all share your thoughts, Lily. Well done!

Tommy has worked very hard over the last few weeks. For science, he completed a food diary, and, in maths, he converted analogue and digital clock times and units of length and mass. Also, Tommy completed comprehension questions and he practised using apostrophes for single and plural possession. I particularly like the triptych that he has created in R.E. He considered how the disciples on the road to Emmaus felt before and after encountering the Risen Christ and he wrote a thoughtful prayer to Mary. Keep up the great work, Tommy!

Eva has been ploughing through her maths and English work this week. In maths, she has constructed a bar chart and a pictogram before accurately interpreting these. In English, Eva has been identifying main and subordinate clauses in complex sentences, practising writing the words that she needs to learn to spell and certain letter joins in handwriting. Also, she has written a film review. If you haven’t already watched the film ‘Penelope’, Eva recommends that you do. For art, she used felt squares to create a space invader wearing a witch’s hat. Excellent work, Eva!

Oliver has been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks. He enjoyed camping out in his garden with his brother, Frank. They watched films, played games and toasted marshmallows on a fire. It sounds and looks like you had great fun. Oliver played ‘Happy Birthday’ to his sister, Julia, on his guitar. Also, he has answered comprehension questions, practised writing his letter joins and the words that he needs to spell, as well as practising using apostrophes for plural possession. Oliver completed a review on the film ‘Boss Baby’. He recommends that you watch it, if you haven’t already seen it, as he thinks it is funny. In R.E, he has written a lovely prayer to Mary and created a triptych. Super work, Oliver! Keep up the great effort!

Ffion has thoroughly enjoyed completing her art work this week. Using Paint software, she created a picture of Maleficent followed by a picture of her family. Both pictures are fantastic and very effective, Ffion! For maths, she completed a traffic survey before presenting the information gathered using a bar chart. Well done, Ffion!

James Clancy has been working extremely hard. He completed an additional R.E task as he researched the story of Our Lady of Fatima for her feast day on 13th May before drawing a lovely picture of her. Well done, James! Also, he created an excellent triptych of the risen Christ and the disciples on the road to Emmaus before carefully considering how the disciples felt before and after encountering the risen Christ. In art, he used Paint software to create his own PAC-MAN image. For maths, he completed a traffic survey as well as statistical work, and, for English, he answered comprehension questions and wrote a film review for ‘Jurassic World’. He is continuing to train in Taekwondo via Zoom, and is enjoying playing football during his break times. James is proving to be a tremendous help around the house,  assisting with the cooking and washing. We are really impressed with you, James!

Olivier worked hard to complete all of the tasks set in four days so that he could have Friday off. Like Ffion, he had great fun completing his art work and the traffic survey. Last weekend, Olivier went on a twenty mile bike ride! He must have been exhausted when he finally made it home!

Alicja has had another productive week of Home Learning. She has completed all of the maths and English tasks set as well as writing a lovely prayer to Mary. Well done, Alicja!
