World Book Day 2022

By Ella Hands3rd March 2022

The Retail Trends Transforming World Book Day | licenseglobal.comIn school today, we celebrated World Book Day. The aim of the day is to celebrate the joy and value of books and the art of reading. Children, and many staff members, attended school dressed as book characters or dressed in their pyjamas and it was very interesting to see the different costumes. Thank you, parents, for your efforts in getting costumes prepared/made. Below are photographs of what each year group and staff looked like. Can you work out the various characters?

Children put their World Book Day tokens towards the cost of books at the Usborne Book Fair which was held in the School Hall before and after school. The fayre was very successful and the sale of books totalled an amazing £749.72. This means that the school will receive £449.83 to spend on books which is fantastic! Thank you very much for supporting this.

Usborne Book Fair | Rochester Montessori School

Children within each year group competed against each other to draw a picture and/or complete a piece of writing. Most of the tasks were based on a book that the children had had read to them in class. It was apparent, from looking at all of the entries, that the children put a great deal of thought and effort into this work and it was not an easy task to choose only one winner from each class. Winners will be announced during tomorrow’s Superstars Assembly.

And the winner is... - Girl on the River

Below are a selection of entries from each year group.

The Masked Reader was back this year as part of our World Book Day celebrations. Each day, a video has been posted of a member of staff reading an extract from a children’s book. However, the staff member’s face and voice have been disguised. The children have thoroughly enjoyed trying to use the clues given to them to work out who is behind the disguise. Who will tomorrow’s final Masked Reader be?

This year, as with previous years, World Book Day at All Souls was a great success and I would like to thank all those involved – pupils, parents and staff – for your time, efforts and support. The joys and benefits of reading are enormous and we, at All Souls, hope to continue to encourage and enthuse all of our children with above of reading that will last well beyond World Book Day.

The Masked Reader – Day One

By Ella Hands28th February 2022

The Masked Reader is back this year, as part of our World Book Day celebrations. Each day, a video will be posted of a different member of staff reading an extract from a children’s book. However, the staff member will have disguised his/her face and voice. Each day, it is your task to use the clues given to you to work out who is behind the disguise. Tomorrow you will find out who is behind today’s disguise.

Usborne Book Fair

17th February 2022Ella Hands

On World Book Day, which takes place on Thursday, 3rd March, 2022, there will be an Usborne Book Fair in the School Hall. Children in Years N, R, 1 and 2 can visit the fair between 8.30a.m. and 9a.m. and children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 can visit between 3.15p.m – 3.45p.m.

Books will be priced from £2 upwards and children will have the opportunity to put their book token towards the cost of a book. Every book that is bought or ordered at the fair will help the school to obtain free books.  Books will be available to purchase or order on the day and can be paid for via cash or card. If you are unable to visit the book fair with your child, books can be ordered during the week commencing 28th February and paid for with cash. All orders will be delivered to school by 11th March. Our local Usborne Partner visited our school earlier this week and shared with the children some of the books that will be available to purchase/order. Along with a book token, your child should be bringing home today an order form which contains a list of age appropriate books for children to order.

The joys and benefits of reading are enormous and we, in school, hope to continue to encourage and enthuse your child with a love for reading that will last well beyond World Book Day.

Thank you for your support.

Year 1 Support Safer Internet Day

By Ella Hands8th February 2022

This morning, the children in Year 1 enjoyed listening to the story of Digiduck and the Magic Castle.

See the source image

The story focuses on Digiduck and some of his friends playing an online game. This story raised conversations about aspects of gaming such as:

  • how to tell if real money can be spent
  • keeping personal information, such as passwords, safe
  • what makes a strong password and
  • who we should tell if we see something on an online game that worries us or makes us feel sad.

Here are examples of some of the children’s work identifying who they would tell if they saw something on an online game that upset them:

The children imagined that Digiduck had been sent an unkind message by another user on the online game. They wrote kind messages to Digiduck to make him feel better. Here are some examples:

The children were very engaged and keen to learn about how to keep safe when using online games.
