Twycross Zoo

We had an amazing day yesterday at Twycross Zoo.  It may have poured with rain but we didn’t let that stop us.  We saw a variety of animals and attended a group sessions, where we got to stroke a tortoise and a cockroach.  The zoo staff members commented on how well behaved and well mannered the children were.  I couldn’t be more proud of them.  One of our highlights was the elephants who decided to have a bath right in front of us (see video below).  We are now going to continue our animal learning back in the classroom and will present our EYFS assembly on 28th June.

Tesco Trip

Reception had a fantastic trip to Tesco yesterday which was linked to our healthy eating topic.  The children got to look around the store and became staff members for the morning.  They went behind the scenes to look at the stock and got very cold looking in the huge fridge!  We hunted around the fruit and veg to find food on our checklists.  We visited the bread, cheese and fish counters too.  Some children were brave enough to hold a mackerel and a mussel!  We finished off by sampling some of the fruit, veg, bread and cheese, delicious!

It’s Hailing!

The children were so excited to see the hail this week.  Lots of children had never been out in hail, so that’s exactly what we did.  We tried to catch it in our hands and on our tongue! We made observations by collecting ice in a cup and then watching it over the course of the afternoon.

Dentist Theme

The children have been very excited this week with our dentist theme.  The role play area has been great fun.  They’ve written about how to brush their teeth, built dentists’ out of lego, created toothbrushes out of playdoh and learnt what foods are bad for our teeth.  We have also been talking about healthy eating and exercise.  We ran on the spot for 1 minute really fast to see what happened to our bodies.

Library Visit

Yesterday afternoon, reception had there first school trip.  We walked to Earsldon library and listened to a story called ‘The Kitchen Disco’.  It was a very interactive story and the children had lots of fun telling jokes and dancing!

Holi Celebration

Yesterday we celebrated the Hindu Festival Holi.  The children wore bright clothes and we spent the morning doing lots of activities do to with colour.  We created multicoloured handprints using paints, we coloured pictures and made cards.  We also tried some different colourful fruit: papaya, kiwi, sharon fruit, pomegranate.

The children had great fun!

Important reminder

Reception will be celebrating the Holi Festival on Monday.  This is a Hindu festival which is also known as the festival of colour.  We would like children to come to school in non-uniform wearing as many bright clothes as they can.  Please don’t buy anything new, whatever you have at home will be perfectly fine.

What a busy week!

Reception had great fun making pancakes on Tuesday, each group measured out the ingredients and whisked them together before Miss Cowley put them in the frying pan.  We gave them a little flip in the air to turn them over.  Then the children could pick their own topping and spread it on their pancake themselves!

Learning in Reception

This week we have been learning how to continue a rhyming string.  The children have really enjoyed listening to lots of Dr Seuss stories (cat in the hat, fox in socks etc).  They also learnt how use a simple program on Education City, matching rhyming words and popping initial sound balloons.

We also practised our ball skills, throwing, catching and kicking a ball to our friends in a controlled manner.  We didn’t let the rain stop us going outside!
