Photographers at a Coventry Landmark!

We went to explore our beautiful Cathedral to gain inspiration for our descriptive writing in English. We went armed with our school tablets and skills of photography to make sure we got the perfect shot for our stimulus to write about. The children were exceptionally behaved and many different members of the public stopped to say how lovely, polite and respectful they were.

We even got an invite inside the new Cathedral before it opened to get to experience the amazing space completely on our own. A very exciting trip and we can’t wait to show you our finished pieces of writing later in the week.

Walk Against Hunger 2022

In Year One we have been supporting the CAFOD campaign of Walk Against Hunger as part of our Lenten duty. We have taken to the cause so readily and have been putting our best foot forward everyday to walk our 1km.

The children sing, chant and help each other along the way every day and we are so proud to see how well they are supporting one another, including when a friend may take a tumble.

We have now walked 50km as a class!

Celebrating Mary!

We were lucky enough to make a wonderful community link with Herald Lodge care home. Last week we made cards for a very special resident who was turning 102. Mary has been cared for by Herald Lodge and they reached out to see if we would like to join in with the birthday celebrations. Although we couldn’t go into the care home we sent beautiful handmade cards and a bunch of flowers to her and wished her well as she enters her 102nd year.

The care home and Mary were blown away and can’t wait to welcome us to the care home to visit when it is safe to do so.

WBD 2022 – Celebrating books in Year One!

We spent World Book Day celebrating books and our ability to share stories. Our wonderful costumes, imagination and creativity was great to see and be able to share with one another.

 

We shared the book Supertato and focused on the character of the ‘Evil Pea’. We thought about all his evil plots and the mischief he got into throughout the story. We then worked to create a wanted poster to help find the Evil Pea, our brilliant pictures and fantastic description would definitely make it easier to find him. The winner will be announced in our Superstar Assembly on Friday, although Mrs Hands tells me it was very difficult to pick just one winner from all the fantastic wanted posters.

 

We strut our stuff down the catwalk as we showed off our amazing outfits to the rest of our class and shared the story that our character appears in. The children were brilliant and all cheered each other on which was lovely to see.

 

A fantastic World Book Day 2022!

Year One weekly round-up (14.02.22)

A lovely last week to end our first Spring half term. The children have applied themselves with new learning in maths and continued to focus on their use of capital letters for proper nouns as well as joining clauses in English. Within our RE learning, we have been thinking about our forgiving God and how we may need God’s help in our lives to help us to make the right choices.

The children led in a beautiful prayer service all about letting our sins be washed away and had reflection time about some of our own wrong choices, asking for forgiveness for these and letting them go with the promise of trying our best to not make these choices again.

In our dance lessons with Mrs Cooke, we have been working on Samba, Merengue and contemporary dance. We loved showing our new dance moves to Mrs McGrath and Ms McGaffney and we are finding a way to upload these so you can see our dance moves in action.  We were all kings and queens of the dance floor this week.

A very proud week and much to celebrate as we get ready to begin our half term holiday. Well done Year One!

 

 

 

Planning meeting for our Prayer Garden

As part of our Chaplaincy team action plan we are looking to renew and improve our beautiful prayer garden.

Our chaplaincy team came together in today’s meeting to put together preliminary plans for what they would like to do with this space next. We will meet with Mr Gale after half term to discuss a budget and timescales to complete our plans.

Exciting times lay ahead.

A week in Year One (31.01.22)

What a busy week we have had! We continued to work on our sharing by 2 in our groups to begin with. We used objects and sharing circles to help us to see how when we share the amount must be shared fairly between the circles.

In our art lesson, we worked with Miss Quinn on adding some finer details to our seasons collage and look forward to finishing them off next week with some weather clues added on.

In our English we finished our non-chronological reports about the North Pole animals. The children tried their absolute best and created some informative texts all about their chosen animal. We were very proud of their dedication to complete their reports 🙂

In RE we have been exploring making the right or wrong choices and how sometimes it is hard to make the right choice for different reasons. We looked at different scenarios and how the person could have made a better choice as well as what we should do to help ourselves and others when we make the wrong choice. We reflected  on the story of the Prodigal Son and thought about how even when we make bad choices there is always the chance to be forgiven. We look forward to learning more about forgiveness and the sacrament of reconciliation next week.

Spring Project – A call to serve

Following our Vocation assembly on Monday the children have been set their Spring Project. The letter below has been sent to all parents via email to explain what the children’s task is in more detail.

I cannot wait to see their projects on their chosen person and hear all about the reasons for their choice. The children had some fantastic ideas in the assembly of people they could choose and demonstrated a fantastic understanding of following a call to serve.

A huge thank you!

We wanted to share our huge thanks with Herald Lodge Care Home. We are so lucky to have made a community link with this care home and in the lead up to Christmas were due to go and sing some Christmas carols with the residents. Although this has been postponed we were overwhelmed to receive a gift for each of our children for Christmas.

The children were so excited and so incredibly grateful. We cannot wait to go and visit the care home and hopefully give back some smiles that they gave to our children.

Maths Madness!

A wonderful start to our term with the children able to recap our learning from Autumn Term maths learning and then beginning our new unit of multiplication.

The children worked well last week to understand number, from recognition to formation and simple addition/subtraction. The children showed their skills and growing confidence in counting, ordering and matching number to demonstrate how far they have come since September.

This week we have started a new unit. Although seeming a little worried and unsure to begin with, their faces once they had learnt the new method was so lovely to see. Take a look at some happy and proud faces below!
