The Romans have invaded!!!!!!!!

Well what a day for Year Three. Focusing on our history topic of the Romans, the children all became our very own All Souls Army, fighting for freedom. Early in the week the children had created their own shields with symbols to represent them, they drafted these as designs and then spent yesterday afternoon creating them. We formed different shield formations, took part in a true Roman march and even had our very own battle (non-contact of course)! The children were brilliant!! Science – Magnetic walk

Yesterday, as part of our science investigation, we walked around the school discovered the magnetic and non-magnetic objects in our environment. The children worked in groups to discover whether different objects had a stong magnetic pull or a weak magnetic pull. The children did a great job at investigating the different objects, even outside in the freezing temperatures!

Advent

Today we lit the first candle of our Advent wreath, we focused in our prayer service about people who need our prayers the most and people we will keep in our prayers over advent and the Christmas season. We also looked into the meaning of advent and what we can do to prepare for Christmas. Have a look at some of our pictures of our class wreath. One of our children has even made her own advent wreath which she shared during this time. Super work Emily!!

Our focus in literacy continues to be on developing narrative. Today we have been exploring descriptive language and using this to create and edit exciting setting descriptions. The children had their own setting to focus on and then discussed their work with other groups to edit and improve.

Creating our settings

In literacy we are focusing on narrative and creating stories. We went outside to gain inspiration for the setting we would like to create for our own stories based on how we wanted to make the reader feel. We now have some completed first drafts of our settings for the stories in sketches. A very creative year three class before the rain came down so heavy, even the trees couldn’t protect us any longer!

Making Muffins!

To complete our unit of instructional writing the children produced their own set of instructions with a focus on making chocolate muffins. We linked this instructional writing with some Design and Technology to create our very own chocolate muffins. The children followed their own instructions, weighed the ingredients, took turns to mix and created their own muffins. Myself and Miss Quinn took the oppourtunity to make some extra to try ourselves and we were not disappointed! A delicious treat to finish off a wonderful half term!

Science! Permeability of rocks

In science, our topic has been all about rocks, soils and fossils. In todays session we looked at the permeability of rocks and whether different groups of rocks were more permeable than others. We had a range of rocks to test and we observed what happened when they were left in water for different periods of time. We came up with different predictions and had to decide at the end the most permeable and the least permeable rock.
