What a fabulous first week in Year 6!
The children have loved being reunited with their friends and getting to know their (lovely!) teachers. They have all been very keen to get stuck into their new roles and all the responsibilities that come with being the oldest pupils in the school – even the minor things like sitting on the benches in assemblies and eating their lunch al fresco most days!
We are all super excited for the year ahead!
We have been getting into the festive spirit this week in Year 6, wearing our Christmas jumpers, eating Christmas dinner and enjoying a visit from our friend, Olaf!
We also enjoyed taking part in the Christmas Chocolate Raffle – thank you to all those who bought tickets!
We hope you enjoy your Christmas cards as much as we enjoyed making them!

Today, our Missio Advent Calendar asked us to think about how we can be
PEACE-MAKERS.
We first considered what ‘peace’ meant. Here are some of the children’s responses:

We then considered why peace is important:
We took it in turns to read out our peace-making promises before adding each of them to create a class paper chain.
Thank you to Ha-Eun and Lola W who planned, prepared and led a beautiful class liturgy on this week’s Advent theme of ‘Peace’.
The scripture they chose reminded us to always be peaceful and put our faith in God; in turn that will strengthen us.
They asked us to take a moment to reflect on a time when we felt most at peace. Here are a selection of our thoughts:
Year 6 enjoyed taking part in the ‘Advent Preparation Through Song’ liturgy with One Life this afternoon. It was lovely to end our first week of Advent by taking some time out to listen to the joyful songs about Jesus’ coming.
We have been busy in Year Six this week writing letters to the residents of The Spinney Care Home.
As part of our Advent preparation, we discussed how this time of year can be difficult for some people for many reasons. We talked about the many ways in which we could help spread hope, peace, joy and love to members of our community; we agreed that reaching out to the elderly was just one way in which we could do this. We are looking forward to posting our letters and donations next week and hope they bring smiles to the faces of many.

Today, Year 6 came together to celebrate the beginning of Advent 2020. We started off our day with a virtual whole school assembly in which we were reminded of the importance of this special season.
Our RE lesson today taught us about the dual meaning of Advent: the countdown to Jesus’ birthday but also the anticipation of his second coming. We talked about how we need to be ready in our hearts and minds for when this day comes and therefore need to spend time this Advent strengthening our relationships with ourselves, eachother and God through prayer and kindness. We created some posters to display around the school to advertise the true meaning of Advent to the other year groups.
During the afternoon, we used our watercolour skills to paint a variety of leaves to make an Advent wreath for our display board.
We also took it in turns to build our class wreath for our prayer focus.
In Year 6 this Advent, we are being Secret Saints. The class Advent calendar that we created together will reveal an act of kindness per day; we will be making a conscious effort to fulfill each of these tasks towards the friend we have been secretly given.
We are looking forward to celebrating this special season together.
Year 6 spent some time enjoying the outdoors on Friday.
They used their forest school slot to take part in the bucket challenge. Ask them what they had to do and what was difficult about this task.
The boys also earnt some time on the balancing ropes thanks to their victorious win on TTRS against the girls.
As we approach the First Sunday (Advent Sunday) of Advent, James and Darci led Year 6 in a prayer service to focus our attention on the Advent message of hope.
Thank you James and Darci for beginning our Advent season in which we prepare our hearts and mind as we look forward to the Second Coming of Christ.
Miss Quinn let Year 6 loose with the watercolour paints this week as they practised using different techniques such as blotting, bleeding, resisting and even experimenting with table salt!
