Mrs Hartwell
Thank you to all parents and grandparents who attended Parents Evening this week. It was lovely to catch up with you all and spend time sharing your child’s achievements and progress so far this year. As always, should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Well done to all of Year 6 for collectively making promises as part of their Commitment Mass today in preparation for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation in June this year. Thank you to Roisin, Finn and Orla O for reading beautifully. Thank you also to Mrs Etherson, Mrs Brennan, Mr Schofield, Mrs Gaffney and Mr Walsh for reading the bidding prayers at mass today, especially at such short notice.
Last but not least, I finally had chance to read your stories that you wrote over the half term break; I thoroughly enjoyed them. It was very difficult to pick the winners but as promised:
1st place: The Abandoned House by Jordan Chatland *20RT*
2nd place: The Watchmaker’s Daughter by Aoife Walsh *10RT*
3rd place: Taken by Ben Jones *5RT*
I would also like to award Annie, Grace H and Roisin with 2RT each.
Well done to all of you! I will put them together into a book to add to our library for you to all read.
This week started off with a good gossip about what secondary schools we are all going to – it is scary how fast Year 6 is flying by but exciting too! In numeracy, we have been working hard (as usual) learning how to transform shapes using translation, reflection and rotation. In literacy, we started our week off by collectively creating our own animal mash ups in preparation for the non-chronological reports we have been writing. Take a look in our literacy books to find out more about the ‘Lion Cow-raffe’, the ‘Sheep-bird Butterlion’, the ‘Horion Snakeraffe’ and many more weird and wonderful creatures! After working hard all week on improving our writing skills we were rewarded with a bit of extra play Friday afternoon, which of course we all deserved and enjoyed!
Choir have been practicing for their Strictly appearance which we hope goes really well on Sunday! We have all been improving out musical talents writing our own songs in groups for Mrs Ellis – soon we will performing to Mrs Hartwell and Mr Cooke. As usual, we also have had another amazing ukulele lesson with Mr Evans!
In PE we did a bleep test with Mr Youson and we have also started Gaelic football with Mrs Fennell this week where we soon realised this was not Mrs Hartwell’s thing!
On Tuesday we sung a big Happy Birthday to Orla O’Shea and thanked her for her yummy sweets! We also wish Callum Keane a big Happy Birthday who also turns 11 this weekend!
After trying out for the Rowing Competition, Catherine, Roisin, Maticia, Finn,Ben S and Joe were picked to represent our school! They did us all proud by taking second and third places! Well done all!
Well done to our super duper Superstars this week: Ju-Eun for her superb effort in Maths and Bronagh for her improved writing skills! Well done! *5RT each*
We have also been thinking about the promises we want to make in preparation for our Confirmation in June and have made some certificates to present to Father Michael during our commitment mass this Sunday. We have also been asked to think about choosing a Saint who means something to us.
Have a lovely weekend! We hope to see you all Sunday. 🙂
Hi debaters,
I have sent you all the new and improved debate notes, typed up by Mrs Elkins, for you to start practicing. The only problem is, I don’t have Ben Jones’ email address and also not sure how often you all check them so asking for the help of all Year 6 to spread the word about this message. If Jordan, Michael and Ben S could let me know if you have received them and if Ben J could email me at [email protected] then I can forward them on to you.
Hope you are all enjoying your half term and not missing us too much! Look forward to hearing all about it.
See you Monday
Mrs Hartwell and Mrs Elkins
🙂
Have a very happy and safe half term Year 6! We look forward to reading your stories upon your return… Happy writing!
🙂
Mrs Hartwell and Mrs Elkins
We have been that busy that we have forgotten to update our blog in a while… So here is the latest news from Year 6…
In English, we have been writing diary entries from the perspective of a boy who decided to move out of home and into his tree-house. We have been learning to use chatty vocabulary and higher level punctuation. We then learned how to write a eyewitness recount, inspired by a sneaky scene that Mrs Hartwell set up behind our backs with the help of Miss Quinn and some Year 5’s.
In Maths, we have been working really hard on percentages, decimals, fractions, angles and co-ordinates: It has been very challenging but we all feel very proud with our improving skills and knowledge. Talking of Maths, we found out Henryk had got through to the next stage of the Primary Maths Challenge, which he entered on Wednesday, so we would like to congratulate him for getting this far and keep our fingers crossed for his results of this one.
In Science, we have been learning about how the eye works; in Geography we have been learning the stages of the water cycle; in Art we have been practicing our sketching skills; in Music we have been writing our own songs; in PE we have been putting together our own Boxercise routines and in RE we had a visit from Father Michael who talked to us about his vocation and have been learning about the Pope, Archbishop and our parish, All Souls.
This was our final week of cycling proficiency- we have all really enjoyed this opportunity and learned a lot. Thank you to all of our cycling teachers and well done to everyone who has improved their cycling skills. Some of us are even taking part in the Level 3 course, taking place in the half term.
Finally, we would like to give Ben, Michael and Jordan a huge round of applause for coming second in the Primary Schools Debate. They are through to the finals, which take place in March. Well done!
🙂
Wow – our first week back at school is already over!
This week has been super busy, beginning with our new text in literacy called ‘Tuesday’ by David Wiesner. We were quite surprised when we realised it was a picture book but had a great lesson exploring it, making predictions and discussing each scene.
In History we were learning about a man called Al Khwarizmi from Baghdad AD900, who has had a great influence on society today, particularly in maths with algebra and algorithms. We had a discussion about algorithms and how life today would be different without them before making our own. Our task was to program Mrs Hartwell (our robot) into making jam sandwiches – if we accomplished the task, we got to eat the sandwich! I think it’s safe to say that none of us received the sandwich we had in mind – some of us never received one at all! It was really fun to learn how specific each instruction had to be so that the robot did not malfunction.
We have also been doing some practice SATs this week to see how much we have already learned and what areas we still need more practice on.
On Thursday, most of us had our first cycling proficiency lesson which went down really well! We also were very excited for the return of Mr Evans for our Ukulele lesson – we were very happy to hear his shout out to us on the radio on Christmas Eve!
The choir have also been busy rehearsing for the Young Voices concert next Thursday evening, we hope to see you there!
Superstars this week are Roisin for her effective blurb she wrote for Tuesday and Kupa for his outstanding and improved score of 19/20 in his Mental Maths test. *5RT
Outstanding work of the week goes to all of Year 6 for working hard on their first week back completing some practice SAT papers. *2RT
Outstanding homework of the week goes to Grace B and Annie for spending every single penny of their budget for their party! *2RT
Have a lovely weekend, preparing for another busy week ahead!

Christmas Cheer in Year 6!
Christmas has certainly brought out the best of year 6!
The week kicked off by us typing up our “Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” themed newspaper report. We all are very proud of the outcome of them. Later on our amazing choir wowed everyone at the Maudslay with their singing skills to raise some more money for their entrance to Young Voice 2014, the most prestigious children’s music concert around. We are very proud of the Choir as they raised a whopping £166! The day certainly ended on a high!
Just like Monday, Tuesday was a blast. We accompanied our Prayer Friends to Church for the first time this term. Later on the Choir had another opportunity to perform at our annual Carol Concert and some other children either narrated or acted. There was really something for all of us! We then sang a special happy birthday to Finn who turned eleven that day.
The fabulous week continued on Wednesday by us getting artsy with glitter, card and stencils as we made some considerate Christmas cards for our loved ones. We were getting very excited by the sound of Christmas crackers snapping as we got ready to dig into our Christmas dinners. AIP organized a Christmas word search for anyone having a Christmas word search and we congratulated Orla J as she won and soon she will be the owner of a brand new bike. Mrs Hartwell then put our knowledge to the test as we completed a Christmas themed quiz. Well done to Kelsey, Ju-Eun and Orla O for completing the quiz with the most correct answers.
On Thursday, we had our first ukulele concert with special guests… Our prayer friends! By the end they were clapping and singing along with us! Later on we changed into pyjamas (some people even put in the effort to wear striped pyjamas!) and got ready to watch “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. Most of us thoroughly enjoyed the movie but on the other hand some people preferred the book. We learnt how hard life was for some people during World War II and the Holocaust.
The last Friday of our first half term of Year 6 has come so quickly. We all brought in a pound in order to be able to wear non-uniform for the day. We got in teams and had a hockey tournament with Year 5 and we are happy to say Year 6 were left as proud winners! Then in the afternoon we had a party where we were allowed to play with our toys and eat lots of yummy food – we loved it!
Well done to this weeks Superstars:
Roisin for great passion in all her singing and Ciara for improved concentration in class.
From all of Year 6, we wish you a very merry Christmas!
