Home Learning – Year One – W/B 11th May

By Miss R Corkerry16th May 2020

Some wonderful pictures and descriptions from Abbie started the week. Abbie has worked really hard with her maths and measured lengths and weights of items around the house. In science, Abbie designed and constructed a comfortable and useable home for hedgehogs, where they can stay safe and have access to food and water. Abbie chose to complete her brochure on Penzance and used some beautiful photographs to show the great things that can be enjoyed there. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Abbie’s description of Mr Twit’s garden, have a read of it below, I am sure you’ll agree that it is a fantastic piece of writing from a child in Year One! Abbie always plans her writing like we do at school and it shows! Well done Abbie, a great start!

George has been working hard and had a very busy week. He flew through his maths showing his little brother how to measure volume accurately and moved on to working hard on his reading comprehension. George decided to follow the journey of a potato right from planting the potatoes through to when we buy them at the shops. George once again blew me away with his responses n his RE lessons this week and chose a very reflective Bible story about the disciples asking Jesus how to pray and have more faith. I think it was a lovely choice, and maybe we could all say the Our Father for our All Souls’ family. I particularly liked George’s rocket that he made out of Lego, have a look below!

Another great start for Grace this week. She has flown through her maths work and is continuing to work hard on her reading comprehension. This week the children were tasked with writing a creative story using an opening sentence given to them. Grace has made a good start and I can’t wait to read the finished piece. Grace has also made her own healthy food plate. As part of our D&T focus we are looking more closely at the things we eat and making sure we are having a balanced diet. Grace has made her plate and chosen foods that she enjoys from each of the food groups. Well done!

It was lovely to receive an email from Jamie this week. He has been trying hard with his home learning and shared a few of these activities. I enjoyed seeing his Hedgehog home that he has designed and made. He chose different materials that would protect the hedgehog from the wind to keep them safe. Jamie also followed a recipe to make a chicken and chorizo salad, it looks very tasty! A budding chef in our midst. Well done Jamie – Keep it up!

A great update from Phoebe today. She started the week working hard on her phonics, spelling, English, D&T and RE! What a busy start to the week! Phoebe also took a break from her work and went with her mummy for a long walk. It is lovely to hear that the children are getting out and about and having this time away from directed learning to let go and have conversations with those they love. Well done Phoebe!

It was wonderful to get and email from Sophie, updating me on all the wonderful things she has been up to whilst learning at home. A few of the tasks she has completed are below. I particularly enjoyed reading Sophie’s Easter prayer and seeing her lovely steps of plant growth. Sophie’s artistic skills were showcased in the lovely detailed drawings of the different stages of a plant’s life cycle. Sophie has also been working hard on her reading comprehension and remembering to answer in full sentences. What I was very happily shocked and very proud of how amazing her cursive writing has become! She has clearly worked very hard and practises regularly. Well done Sophie!

I have been blown away by the stories that I have received over the week. This week the children were tasked with writing a creative story. They were given the 2 characters, main setting and the opening sentence and they then had to plan the story and write a beginning, middle and end. It is something we have done at school but was a big ask for the children and they have definitely risen to the challenge. Please take a few moments to have a read of them and I think you will agree they are fantastic pieces of writing for children that are in Year One. From their use of adjectives to their cursive writing, they have made be really proud. Well done! I have attached their stories below with some of the other tasks they have been completing this week.

Continuing our Faith Journey

By Miss R Corkerry13th May 2020

Just an update on accessing resources to continue the children’s faith development at home. Here there is an assembly that the children can watch and join in with at home, there are questions and reflection opportunities so they can do this independently but might be quite nice as a family activity.

https://www.tentenresources.co.uk/primary-subscription/assemblies/assembly-2020-05-18/2020_05_18_assembly_for_home/

I have loved receiving your photos of prayer areas; please continue to send these for our Catholic Life books. Ten: ten have provided liturgies for the past few weeks which some of you have already accessed. These are great step by step guides for those of you who may be struggling with new ideas or are new to having prayer services at home. Before you start you may want to gather the family together. This might be in the same room or if you are in different places, you might gather online, using Skype, for example. You will then need to decide who is going to be Prayer Leader. You could have more than one Prayer Leader. The Prayer Leader should read aloud all of the text on screen where indicated. Everybody else can join in with the parts where indicated. You may like to light a candle to mark the start of your Family Liturgy. Once you are ready to start click ‘Read more’ to start the service.

In addition, there is access to the daily prayers. This week the aim is to help children to relate to God in a personal, fun and tangible way. The prayer allows children to think of God not as a distant figure in the sky, but as a personal God who came down to earth and walked and talked just like we do!

The prayers for each day are the same: a litany of 12 prayers with actions. Adults or older siblings can join in to encourage the children to follow the actions by joining in themselves! The prayers naturally conclude with a more reflective tone, so please encourage children to close their eyes and reflect at the appropriate moment during the prayer time.

The final resource is a recommendation from a parent at All Souls’. She has used the resource and her children actively engage with it. Having had a look, it is a great resource and is at the child’s level throughout. There are homilies and reflections for any Bible story you can think of and provides a guide to what the weekly Gospel stories mean in an age appropriate way.

I hope the children are continuing their faith journey at home, although different to their normality, in prayer and reflection we can find peace. Any worries, concerns or thoughts can be shared through prayer and it can be very powerful.

I look forward to receiving more photos of your prayer times.

Stay safe,
Miss Corkerry

Reading Resource

By Miss R Corkerry8th May 2020

A few parents have been asking about reading and additional books. Unfortunately sending more books home isn’t something we are able to do at the moment however there is a comprehensive site called Reading Eggs that you can access from home.

https://readingeggs.co.uk/

The site is normally charged however they have a 30 day free trial for parents that will hopefully be able to assist with reading at home. All that is required is an email address for access and it will then ask you to set up a profile for your child/children.

Once you have activated your account your child will need to do the placement test (on their profile) this will show the level they need to begin at. For each level there are different activities, lessons and books that the children can read online. There are word recognition activities, reading comprehension and lessons they can complete.

The children work through the level with a map and when they get to the end of the activities and books there is then the chance to move onto the next level.

With the books you can choose between a ‘read to me’ function where the book is read aloud to them or the child reads the book out loud themselves. For those that are just beginning to read or struggle with some vocabulary it may give them a bit of confidence to have the book read to them first and then for them to try it themselves.

It is a good resource to use and as it is free to access for a short while it may be worth setting up an account if you feel your child is not reading enough or could benefit from more reading activities and practise. It is for all ages from 3 up to 13 years.

Week Five – Home Learning – Year One

By Miss R Corkerry5th May 2020

It has been a fantastic start to the week and once again I am delighted to have received so many wonderful emails from the children in Year One.

Millie has been incredibly busy over the past few weeks; she has been enjoying many different science experiments alongside the curriculum tasks set. Millie has continued to work hard in her RE and made a beautiful Easter candle using the correct symbols. She has also been practising her cursive joins and is doing brilliantly with forming her letters correctly, starting and finishing in the right place. Millie used her skills to make a wonderful salad with peppers, cucumber and lettuce as part of her D&T work, she showed her ability to sensibly use a knife and served it up at dinner time. I can’t wait to see what Millie gets up to this week!

Phoebe has started the week focusing on maths and our unit of measure. She used a ruler to measure how far she could throw her NASA rocket. One throw was so far that the ruler could not measure the distance so Phoebe had to revise her adding skills to get to the right answer. A great start!

It was lovely to receive an email from Willow showing all of the activities she was most proud of over the past few weeks. It was great to see how well Willow has been getting on and I especially enjoyed the writing and reflection that Willow wrote from the Women at the tomb. It was also lovely to see how hard Willow is trying with her reading comprehension. Well done Willow! Keep it up!

Grace has had another good start to the week despite losing her tooth! She has been working hard on her maths this week as well as her RE and reading comprehension. Grace is trying hard with her cursive writing and continues to try her best with the tasks set. I can’t wait to see what else Grace gets up to this week.

It was lovely to receive an email from George this week. He has been very busy completing all of the different tasks set and has worked particularly hard on his handwriting and RE last week. It was lovely to see that the seeds George has planted have begun to grow and his work in science will hopefully be reality in a few weeks’ time when he will be able to see the life cycle of plants. Well done George!

Evie set out a prayer service for her family and led this prayer service. Despite finding it a little bit tricky with younger sibling it was lovely to see Evie setting such a wonderful example and continuing to live out her faith at home. Well done Evie!

Emily sent another update showing her fantastic brochure on Penzance. This week the children were comparing our city of Coventry to another part of the UK and comparing the similarities and differences. Emily created a lovely brochure describing what to expect from the town. All that work looking at beaches as well as the beautiful sunshine this week, really made Emily want to go to the sea! Emily also worked on her description of Mrs Twit and I loved the picture that she drew at the end! To finish the week Emily has been working on our farm to food unit in D&T and created the journey of a strawberry as a flowchart. Have a look and see if you can trace where your favourite food comes from!

Grace has been busy once again and has managed to complete some additional tasks this week too. Not only has she dyed her hair using crepe paper but she has also completed many different experiments! Keep focusing on those ‘Working Scientifically’ skills Grace. Grace has also taken part in practical maths focus this week of measurement, she has weighed different objects using some kitchen weighing scales and has measured different items using a ruler too! Grace also decided she would prefer to live in Penzance because she likes the sea and there are less people living there. Well done Grace!

Phoebe continued her hard work in maths and collected items from around the kitchen. She looked at the information on the packets that explained what they weighed and ordered them from lightest to heaviest. In her D&T work this week Phoebe decided to look at the journey of a tomato (despite her dislike of them) and followed it right from planting to eating. She also added some lovely drawings to her flowchart to show what happens at each stage. Great work!

Evie emailed over her brochure on Penzance this week. She used some lovely descriptive language and persuasion to make Penzance sound like the dream destination. Her cursive writing looks amazing and all that hard work is definitely paying off! Evie also drew some lovely pictures showing the landscape and activities you can do in Penzance. It is definitely making me want to go! Evie also went beyond the curriculum this week and it was lovely to receive a photo of Evie using a telescope to look at the moon. It has been the ‘flower moon’ this week, the last super moon of the year. As you can see it is very impressive so if you ask your parents very nicely and are well-behaved they might just let you out to have a look yourself. Well done Evie!

Year One – Home Learning – W/B 28.04.20

By Miss R Corkerry29th April 2020

A great start to the week for Year One!

Tai has worked hard with his maths and reading comprehension alreayd this week but my favourite piece of news to recievewas his progress with his pepper plant. Tai has been using his knoweldge ofplants to plant and grow a pepper plant. He looked closely at the life cycle of plants and completed a comic strip showing these stages. I can;t wait to see how well the pepper grows.

Emily started the week with her reading comprehension and a lovely email that she sent with the help of her mum. Emily, like many of her friends in Year One, is trying really hard to complete the home learning tasks but is missing school life a little bit now. We will keep working together and soon we will be back as one big All Souls’ family again.

Once again Grace has had a flying start to the week and has flown through the maths work and onto her science and reading comprehsnion too! A great start back to home learning and it looks like that cursive writing is really starting to come on now. Well done Grace!

Phoebe has worked incredibly hard already this week in mastering money. She has been able to identify different coins and notes and moved on to challenge herself by adding amounts together when buying items. It has been great to hear of Phoebe’s confidence growing when using and recognising money this week. Phoebe is very proud of her achievements and I am too! Keep it up Phoebe!

Jessica has been working hard over the past few weeks and has been focusing on her RE and maths this week. She has made a beautiful Easter candle after researching what these different symbols mean. Jessica also focused on her shapes and has been able to identify the shapes in different objects as well as the properties of different 3D shapes. Well done Jessica!

Abbie has had a fantastic week! Starting out by focusing on money, Abbie was able to recognise coins and notes and moved on to working out more difficult number problems using money. Abbie chose different resources to help her to solve these problems which are great to hear. Abbie then moved on to research one of the countries that is part of the United Kingdom. Having decided on Scotland, Abbie completed her own research and created a brilliant fact file with accurate and interesting information. She planned and set up a beautiful prayer service with the right colour cloth and enjoyed reading the Bible. Abbie finished the week by planning and writing a brilliant description of Mr Twit, she used some great adjectives and even used similes to describe him. I especially enjoyed seeing how brilliantly Abbie’s cursive writing is developing! Well done Abbie!

Phoebe continued her week of hard work focusing on Design and Technology. This week’s focus was planning and making a healthy salad. Phoebe chose to make a fruit salad and because her favourite fruits are berries so she decided to make a mixed berry salad. Phoebe used a knife and very carefully chopped the strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries; she then put yogurt on top and served it to her family. Everyone clearly enjoyed it as all the plates were cleared! To end the week Phoebe focused on Geography and enjoyed looking at the 4 different countries that make up the United Kingdom. Phoebe chose the country of Wales to research, she watched videos on YouTube, looked in books and had a look on the internet and then made a fact sheet on the laptop using Microsoft word! Well don Phoebe on a great week of home learning!

Grace continued her fantastic start to the week and continued to work hard. She moved on to focus on her RE and created a lovely Easter candle using all the symbols that were identified, planning it first and then creating her own candle too! She then focused on her geography and focused on Scotland as her chosen country; she researched facts about this country and created her own fact file including the flag. She then focused on Design and Technology to plan and make a healthy salad. Grace chose to make a mixed salad and included lettuce, carrots, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes and apple! Grace used a knife and very carefully chopped all the ingredients; it looked delicious! Grace has worked hard on her cursive writing and started to practise her ladder letters and zigzag monsters, she is applying this in her work too and the practise is definitely paying off! Grace finished off the week by writing her description of Mr Twit. Well done Grace, another great week of home learning!

Challenge!

By Miss R Corkerry26th April 2020

Hope you have all had a restful and relaxing Easter break and have taken full advantage of the beautiful weather we have been blessed with. I know some of you are missing your weekly prayer services with your friends at All Souls’ so I am setting you a little challenge.

I decided to set up my own prayer service at home, I found items that I had around the house and completed a Liturgy Planner before then preparing my own service. Now I know it is a little different from how we do it at school but this is the perfect opportunity to show your families, siblings and possibly your friends (if you take some photos) how we celebrate through prayer at All Souls’.

So I would like you to take a few moments away over the next few days, you are more than welcome to use my plan or you can create your own, to create and participate in your own prayer service at home. Remember you will need a white piece of cloth as we are still in the season of Easter but other than that use your own creativity.

I would love to see some photographs of your prayer service so please send them to [email protected]
I am hoping to put these in the Whole School Catholic Life folder so it would be great to have as many as possible!

A huge well done to George in Year One!

By Miss R Corkerry15th April 2020

George has been working exceptionally hard and has been sharing his success with his little brother too. He has continued to put his all into his home learning and has produced some beautiful pieces of work especially during Holy Week. His handwriting is really coming along and his cursive joins are looking beautiful.

I especially enjoyed seeing the picture of George sharing in a special meal with his brother. George recreated the Last Supper and lit a candle to show that Jesus is always with them.

Well done George!

Good Friday

10th April 2020Miss R Corkerry

Today marks Good Friday, the day we remember Jesus giving up his life for us. It is important to remember that although today the sun may shine it is a day of sorrow, sadness and repentance. Today we should fast, pray and have some time of silence to commemorate the sacrifice that Jesus made on this day.

During this time in particular it is easy to think of how dark things are and feel sorrow for the things we are missing out on. However, it is always darkest before the light and during this special time it is possible to look past this dark time and focus on the light. Turn our heads away from the sad, worrying things happening in our world and search for the light that exists everywhere. Pray, ask for forgiveness and reflect on all the things to be grateful for.

Please try to live stream a mass at 3pm and encourage your children to take part in this and spend some time today in quiet reflection.

“On this Good Friday may be all be blessed with strength of spirit, hope in things to come and compassion for our worldly family.” Amen.
