The Month of the Holy Rosary

By Miss R Corkerry22nd October 2020

As the month of October draws to a close we shared in a whole school prayer service, via Zoom, to pray the Rosary together.

We reflected on the Luminous Mysteries, meditating on these Mysteries of Light work to bring us a deeper understanding to the life of Jesus. They fill in the spaces for the lesser known areas of the childhood of Jesus and His suffering and death on the cross.

Five brilliant readers from Year Six treated us to the readings of scripture of these five mysteries and the other classes joined in with prayer and reflection.

It was a joy to see all the year groups from Reception through to Year Six sharing in such a special prayer.

Year One LOVE Forest School!

By Miss R Corkerry2nd October 2020

Year One have absolutely loved being in the forest area this week.

From fixing a rope swing, making a kitchen area and creating a seesaw they have really applied themselves to meaningful play in this area.

As much as I’d love to say a cheer fills the air when I tell them it is time for handwriting, it definitely does when I say it is time for forest school. The forest school is unquestionably one of their favourite parts of provision they access in school and we love taking them there.

The skills they gain in this area are invaluable and we have already seen an increase in their resilience and confidence back in the classroom. We hope it continues in the coming months.

Settling in to life in Year One

By Miss R Corkerry18th September 2020

WOW! What a few weeks it has been. As the children are now settled into life in Year One, we thought we would show you just a little of what we have been up to.

These first few weeks our focus has been supporting the children to get used to the environment, helping them adjust to the new routines and build relationships with us and their friends. Assessments are well underway to ensure that the curriculum is everything that the children need and we continue to work on supporting the children to build resilience and self-confidence.

Please find a selection of photos below and use them as a talking point with your children to discover more about what we have been up to.

Today we sent out some of the Year One Common exception words, these are for you to keep at home and practise as much as you can with your children. First and foremost the reading of these words should be the focus but it would be great if with time you can start practising writing these with your children.

I know many of you are inquiring about reading books. We are still reviewing the safest and most efficient way to do this. In the meantime please use the free e-books available through https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/ and for phonics support please use the resources available at https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ both are free to sign up for. If you need guidance on which phase or level your child should be accessing please do not hesitate to email to ask this.

Have a great weekend!

*Year One Home Learning* WB 29.06.20

By Miss R Corkerry5th July 2020

Thank you to the children and parents who have sent in work this week. These three superstars not only sent in work this week but also joined in with our Zoom Maths lesson on Monday. We went back to multiplication and division and worked together to remember the strategies we use to solve these number problems.

Abbie has produced a beautifully write postcard from Paddington to Aunt Lucy and illustrated with her own drawing of Paddington Bear himself. From our History learning this week Abbie chose to set up her own role play and looked after her teddies just like Florence Nightingale looked after the soldiers. She also worked really hard on answering multiplication and division word problems. Well done Abbie!

Emily worked really hard on her postcard from Paddington to Aunt Lucy. After thinking about what she wanted to say and the key events from the book, Emily wrote a beautiful postcard explaining all the adventures that she (as Paddington) had got up to. She even created a landmark front for her postcard, just like you’d buy in a shop. A fantastic piece of writing. Well done Emily!

Another week of hard work from Grace, having focused on her maths and English she moved on to look at the work of Florence Nightingale and made a lamp our of paper craft in the style of a lamp she would have held. Grace also made her own playdough this week, following a recipe and set of instructions. To finish the week, Grace looked at the famous London landmarks and decided to focus on Wembley as her chosen landmark to create a fact file including all the key facts she had researched. Well done Grace!

Year One Home Learning – Weeks 10 and 11

By Miss R Corkerry28th June 2020

Thank you to all the parents who continue to send work in showing all that their children have been up to. It is wonderful to see so many of them still working hard, despite the motivation wearing a little thin at the moment.

Alannah has been busy working on her artistic skills. Throughout the year Alannah showed her art skills and creativity in lessons but her time at home as meant she can work on these even further and I think you’ll agree they are absolutely incredible. Alannah is attending online sessions with the National Art Gallery and creates beautiful pieces of artwork based around a specific theme of the week. It is wonderful to see Alannah using her God given talents and I cannot wait to see her new masterpieces over the next few weeks. Well done Alannah!

A few weeks ago the children were tasked with creating a habitat in their garden or local space for a hedgehog. After many weeks of patiently waiting Evie’s special hedgehog hotel got a visitor. A big hedgehog came to rest his head for a little while and Evie very kindly bought him some food to munch on whilst he rested. Evie also had fun creating a lava lamp. The Year One children are now working on their ‘working scientifically’ skills for the next few weeks and have been tasked with performing some experiments of their own at home. Evie chose the lava lamp experiment and it turned out to be very successful. Well done Evie!

George has been as busy as ever! He worked on his maths and conquered the tricky topic of time. He also took his art materials out with him on a walk and created a lovely summer tree piece of artwork. He also spent time writing his own traditional style tale about a troll ad a fairy, with beautiful cursive writing and some great choices of vocabulary! George has continued to practise his cursive writing and phonics which has meant the work he is producing is presented beautifully and spelt correctly. Well done George!

The week wouldn’t be complete without an update from Grace. Once again Grace has worked incredibly hard at home completing maths, English, science, RE… You name it, Grace has given it a go. Grace continues to work hard on her cursive handwriting and is always searching for more challenges to be had. For our cityscapes focus, Grace chose a local landmark the Whittle Arches and had a brilliant go at sketching them from a photograph. Well done Grace! Another great week!

A huge thank you to those who continue to send work in, it is wonderful to see how well the children are getting on at home. Last week, the children were tasked with writing their own traditional tale. I have been sent some and they are fantastic!

Abbie worked really hard on her writing and not only has worked on her handwriting but also spent lots of time planning her story to think about what journey she wanted her story to go on. Well done Abbie!

Alannah once again blew me away with her fantastic art skills. She continues to look at the work of different artists and uses this as inspiration to create her own pieces. This week the Year One children were focusing on landscapes and Alannah looked at the work of Hockney and used this to create her own piece. She is a brilliant artist and I love seeing her different creative pursuits. Well done Alannah!

Emily worked very hard on her traditional tale. She created her own version of the story of Little Red Riding Hood. She introduced an Evil Queen and a Prince to the story. Beautiful writing and some great ideas, well done Emily!

Phoebe has been as busy as ever! She has exercised everyday both on her trampoline and going for long walks (when the weather was a bit nicer). She planted some sunflower seeds and has looked after them so well they are ready to be potted in their own plant pots as they continue to grow. She has also been working hard on her writing and has used her brilliant ideas to write her own traditional tale about a Princess called Jasmine and a witch called Agatha. Phoebe has made fantastic progress in her phonics and continues to complete daily activities to learn and practise new sounds. Well done Phoebe!

Veronica has been working hard on her maths this week. She has focused on time and solving problems relating to this. She has continued to try really hard and has succeeded! Keep up the good work Veronica, Well done!

Grace has once again worked incredibly hard to complete her home learning. She has given all curriculum areas a go and continues to achieve. You can see from the sheer number of photos that she has gone above and beyond the expectations. Have a look at all of the different things she got up to. She even spotted my mistakes in some of the code breaker tasks and wrote her own number problems to solve and make the code right! Well done Grace!

Year One Zoom Call

By Miss R Corkerry10th June 2020

A massive thank you to all of the Year One parents who have got in touch to say they would like to take part in a Zoom call. We have decided to split the children into groups to ensure they all have the chance to speak and hear without feeling overwhelmed.

Our first zoom call takes place tomorrow (those who are in the first group will have received an email) and we have a few names down ready for our second group, who will be sent an email with details shortly.

If you haven’t yet sent in your child’s name to participate in a zoom call, please do so as soon as you can so we can get them assigned to a group and hopefully get them to see some of their friends!

*Year One* Home Learning – W/B 18th May 2020

21st May 2020Miss R Corkerry

Another week of fantastic learning from Year One. I am so proud of all you have achieved and really enjoy reading your emails and looking at your photos.

George has had another busy week. He has been working on his RE, Design Technology, geography, reading comprehension and continuing his fantastic building of Lego. I loved his prayer and his fantastic story below! Please have a read. Well done George!

Phoebe has had another busy week and has worked really hard on the tricky concept of time. Phoebe sped through the work after it ‘clicked’ and is looking forward to receiving her own clock! Phoebe has also been working hard on her writing and has written some promises that she is going to try and keep after reading the story of Jesus promising his disciples that the Holy Spirit would come to them.

We also send huge birthday wishes to Phoebe who celebrated her birthday earlier in the week! Hope you had a wonderful day!
Well done Phoebe!

It was lovely to receive an email from Tai this week showing how well he has been getting on with the concept of time. He enjoyed watching the videos and has flown through his maths work. He also wrote me a letter as his writing task this week and it is lovely to see how well he is getting on with his handwriting. In his letter he said he is missing his friends at school and asked if I was missing them too. I really am missing you all Tai and hope to see you all soon! In his letter he also explains that he is making an Optimus Prime suit that transforms into a car! Once again, showing his fantastic imagination and creativity. Keep it up Tai!

Veronica sent in more of her maths work. She continues to work hard in maths and has answered some quite tricky word problems for measurement using her own strategies for addition, including column addition. She has also had a go at reading some scales for measuring volume and mass, despite the computer moving all the boxes around! Well done Veronica!

Another week of hard work for Grace. She has focused particularly on maths and has challenged herself to complete some of the more tricky elements of time such as word problems and working out hours less, hours more and reading the time to o’clock and half past. Having learnt about the promise Jesus made and Pentecost in RE, Grace wrote an invitation for a Pentecost party! I’d love to join especially as there promises to be singing and dancing! I also loved seeing Grace’s fruity art! She made a fantastic owl using many different fruits. Fantastic! Well done!

Ascension of The Lord 2020

By Miss R Corkerry20th May 2020

Tomorrow will be the Ascension of the Lord. This is a very special day in the Church as it is the day that Jesus left his disciples on Earth and went to join his Father in Heaven. Jesus was with the disciples on the Mount of Olives and he made his promise to the disciples that they would soon receive the Holy Spirit, and asked them to remain in Jerusalem until the Spirit had come. As he blessed them he began to ascend into heaven to take his seat at the right hand of God.

There are four very important lessons that we need to remember from this most special day:

  • Jesus is Lord in heaven, but he is also Lord in our hearts. Even though he is no longer on Earth, he will be with us forever; in our hearts, in our minds and in our actions.
  • We do not have to be afraid of Jesus leaving us because Jesus has gone ahead to prepare a place for us in heaven with those who love God. All of our friends and family members that have gone before us up to Heaven have met Jesus and one day so will we.
  • We know and feel real things we cannot see, like our parents’ and friends’ love. Just because something isn’t visible doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. We can’t see Jesus or God but we know they exist and we can grow closer to them through prayer.
  • The disciples needed to say goodbye to Jesus, and as Jesus left them, they turned to be closer to each other, to learn more about Jesus and to let others know about the Jesus who awaits them in heaven. That is exactly what we need to do. When things seem to be hopeless we need to join together and provide support to the people we love.

It would be great if the children could participate in mass tomorrow to mark this very special occasion. There is a link below to celebrate with Fr. Anton from the Oratory. This is a Mass for children and will go live tomorrow (Thursday 21 May 2020) at 9:00am https://t.co/NToPC7gr41?amp=1

Keep praying and if you are looking for some new resources to help with prayers and meditation there are some extra resources below.
